'If you want'

If you offer to do something for somebody and their answer is 'If you want', do you take it as a yes or a no?

If they say it in an arsey way, it means no.

If they say it in a pleasant way, it means yes, but they are not hugely bothered either way, so don't put yourself out.

It means they will happily have you do whatever it is for them but they sure as hell won't appreciate it

If I said it, I'd be happy to help if they wanted me to.

This is my attitude to it. Really fucks me off.

My missus is in the habit of saying it - sometimes it means yes and other times it mean no. To understand which you need to pay attention to the tone in which it's said, and that's not always easy to gauge. So now I do nothing and this is causing some problems.

Still it's not 'if I want' at all - I couldn't give fuck, I'm asking you something that deserves at very least a yes or no response.

Depends how it's said, and who by... sometimes people say it to try and please you by giving you options, and other times they say it because they are trying to say no politely haha. Would be much simpler if everyone just said yes or no!
