Panic attacks

Ever since I was about 13, I've had panic attacks caused by a fear of death. They've never been all that regular, but I'm finding they're happening more and more and they are horrible. It sounds stupid maybe but I was wondering do you think it's worth going to a doctor about or will they just think I'm wasting their time? I doubt there's much they can do about it. I'm just wondering if it's linked in with some other stuff that's happened to me (none of it terrible, but I lost one of my best friends suddenly two years ago - she was 25 - and have had quite a bit of stress lately) and I feel like things are building up inside me and I'm not too sure where to turn to try and work it out.

Sorry for the convoluted post, I'm not looking for pity as I think I'm being quite pathetic really. Just wondered what people thought.

It's probably worth going to see a doctor, if only so they can help you realise when an attack is going to happen, and try to improve your ability to control the situation.

There is a bit of info on thesite too.

If they are causing you problems then it's definitely worth seeing your doctor. They aren't dangerous in themselves, but they aren't particularly good for you.

Your doctor may be able to teach you some coping tecnhiques to manage them and minimise the length, or refer you onto someone who will.

    Hello.

I really feel for you as I have suffered from panic attacks over the past 8 years and so does my mother. Mine are also mainly linked to a fear of death.

I would see a doctor if I were you. They certainly won't think you are wasting their time (or a good doctor shouldn't!). They may refer you to a counciller as it may be linked to underlying problems.

Over the years I have learnt some techniques to cope with mine myself although it is very hard.

Let us know how you get on at the doctors and PM me if you want to chat further from someone who understands. It can sometimes be bard to understand them if you have never had one, or at least it was for me until it happened to me!

    Good luck x

I had to see a few before they took me seriously. I got put on beta blockers which were a god send to get rid of the symtoms so I could live a normal life and went to see some councellor who specialised in panic attacks, but she wasn't really much of a help as I only saw her a few times.

I find beta blockers to be really useful so yes it was definately worth seeing the doctor and there are several other options too for treatments, meds etc. I find it helps to know I have some meds with me jus incase as well.

    Good luck :)

I agree with the others. Doctors can do alot for panic attacks. Medication for the need be cirmstances and therapy to help overcome that which causes it. Take care, good luck with it :)

Thank you all - I really appreciate the replies and advice. It's quite good to hear I'm not alone (although I wouldn't wish it on anyone else) and to know there are other people who've gone through similar things and got help. I'll see if I can make an appointment with my doctor and will let you know how things go. Firesilk cheers for the offer of PMing you, may well take you up on it :) x
