Suppose that the queen went crazy, or that a future king/queen was evil. Would they have the power to abolish every kind of democracy in the country and make it a "traditional" monarchy (as in, everything they say goes, every opposition is illegal)?
Theoretically yes, but in practice they'd need someone to actually enforce their orders and democracy is probably too far embedded in this country for people to just follow the orders of the crown
No, they wouldn't have the power to do that in practice. They don't have access to mobilising such an action which would have to include government departments, military ... I would suspect they would be carted off to the loony bin if they tried.
And how do you think the monarchy would do that? Our defence budget is £34bn per year, and the budget for law and order is £24bn. Presumably, these would be the first two groups of people you would need to "buy." With what do you propose the royal family (worth £3bn between them) would bribe a group of people who need that sort of money to run currently? There are a hell of a lot of laws in the UK that still exist technically, but they would never stand up in court, because other laws take precidence. The queen would be in prison faster than you can say "off with her head."
Plus the civil service (how else are you going to collect tax and implement policies), local government, etc, etc
the crown realised they couldn't do this over 400 years ago
She would never have enough money to buy enough of them. And apart from that, most MPs would not be bought either. There are lots of republicans in the Labour Party, for instance, for whom this type of bribe would be impossible. As has been said, she is just a figurehead and has no power. The running of the country and its foreign policy lies completely on the government itself.
