Men dont have more partners than women

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
So we've seen studies saying 'on average men have 10 partners, women 5', or so on - however I just found an interesting website:

http://www.thestar.com/News/article/245522

Which basically says, (obviously enough), that the amount of male-female sexual partnerships is equal to the amount of partners all men have, which is equal to the amount of partners all women have.

So all the theories about men being more promiscuous than women can be chucked out the window!

Of course we bloody don't. Men and women everywhere lie on a daily basis about the number of partners they've had. Men exaggerate upwards, on the grounds they think that a woman won't like a guy who hasn't got much experience. (the opposite seems to be true, speaking from experience) Women scale the number downwards, on the grounds they don't want to be thought of as promiscious sluts.

That said, if you claimed that men had an average of 10 partners, and women an average of 5, that means the actual number of average partners would be 7½. How does that work? Do they count people you've simply given blowjobs to?

there must be a way... must be the same men sleeping with the women so one guy sleeps with 10 women and each one of them counts him and 4 others

or there is the multiply by 3 or divide by 3 rule which means the average woman has 15 and the average man has 3/4 which sounds more like my life lol

Men may not be more promiscouous, but they're definately more sexually active and/or driven.

Proof? Look at the porn industry.

Well it's reassuring as a man I can now logically defend myself against one of the criticisms of my 'penis for a brain' gender :D.

Do they? It seems these days, that girls are equally as proud of their sexual conquests as the blokes seem to be ... :)

there shouldnt be shame attached to number of partners anyones had simply based on number. I dont reckon anyway. Isnt it down tochoice and that?? maybe girls are just more honest about how many guys theyve slept with now, rather than trying to hide it....and maybe guys have stopped eggagerating (ok tarring all with same brush, apologies but have known alot of guys that eggagerate!)

Depends who you talk to, I suspect.

Hmm, most girls I know have more partners than the men I know. But I've noticed they're always very careful to make sure they're in a "relationship" before they do. My female friends have no problem going from boyfriend to boyfriend, but would never do the casual sex thing, probably because of the stigma attached.

That proves the exact opposite of what you're trying to say: female-orientated pornography is the biggest growth market.

Women, I think, are more likely to practice serial monogamy, but I don't think that means they have fewer partners overall.

I feel a poll is in order. Has one been done in the recent past?

Perhaps the biggest growth, but in the mainstream it's been aimed towards men.

I doubt that it is; I'm 24 and I've only had sex with two women.

I'm surprised an emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley doesn't know what a median average is.

Consider Adam, Barry, Chris, Dave Eric, Fred and Geoff and their girlfriends Anne, Betty, Claire, Diane, Elvira, Fiona and Grace

now, Anne is a adventurous. In fact, she's slept with all of the Boys except Barry. Feeling upset, Betty got her own back by sleeping with everyone except Adam
Claire had a thing for triplets, and so slept with Eric,Fred and Geoff
Zack and Zoe are religious, and are pledged to have no sex before marriage

    so the scores are

    Boys Z=0, A=1, B=1, C=3, D=3, E=4, F=4, G=4
    Girls A=6, B=6, C=4, D=1, E=1, F=1, G=1, Z=0

    the averages are
    Boys mode=4, median=3, mean = 2.5
    Girls mode=1, median=1, mean = 2.5

now, to clean up the data, we'll throw away those vlaues that are not within the standard deviation of the average. For the Boys, the standard deviation is 1.6, so our sample is all thos above 0.9, and below 4.1. For the girls the standard deviation is 2.4, so we only count those between 0.1 and 4.9

    this gives us
    boys A=1, B=1, C=3, D=3,. E=4, F=4, F=4; mean = 2.85
    girls C=4, D=1, E=1, F=1, G=1; mean = 1.6

Oh, sorry if my example gives away the plot for next weeks coronation street.

    Hah! I'm holier than thou!
I've only had sex with one, and that was non-penetrative, and so might not even count.

Thanks for all the really sexy and fascinating maths. I think you may have put me off sex for life. Or a week or so, anyways.

I got a distinction in statistics at Uni, thank you very much. Which is why you put me off sex, with your raising of the mental image of exam rooms, and my very unsexy lecturer. I don't think I will forgive you for that for a long, long time!!!!!

I can say with 63% confidence that less than 25% of people recently having taken exams will admit to fantasies of being bent over the exam desk being in their favourite 15%
