War..What do you think?

What do you think of war?

I'm doing an art project based on war and I need other people's opinions on the subject.
Also, if you could say whether or not you have been personally affected by war, that would be very helpful!

I don't think anyone likes war do they? I watched this film last night, and it's probably the best war film I've ever seen, so I'd definitely check it out if I were you (you can watch it here).

Anyway, if you want an alternative viewpoint, it might be an idea to check out some of those flag waving Americans you always see before any war and see why they seem to be so keen to go to war all the time.

Thanks, I'll definitely check out that movie when I get the time. And.. I'm Canadian so I think the perspective here of the war does differ from those in the US. What I'm mostly trying to accomplish is to find out the different opinions people who have not personally been affected by war have, in comparison to those who have.

Too broad a question... My opinion of WW2 is not the same as my opinion of Suez

Sounds pessimistic but every major problem the world has ever faced has been solved with a gun. Has always been like that, and always will be. Human nature I guess.

Well actually, every major problem caused by a gun has been solved by a gun. Not quite the same thing.

The key question IMO is what wars have been necessary?

Sadly very few. Most of them have only been had to serve the nationalistic, imperialistic, religious or egomaniac urges of the rulers of tribes and nations.

Arguably the most pointless of them all must be WWI. That's why every last soldier shot for cowardice should receive a pardon- and every officer who gave orders to charge machine gun nests and senselessly sent thousands of men to a certain death should be posthumously shamed and stipped of all medals and honours.

War has many bad points - although there are some positives which come out from wars which you see years later. A lot of the technology developed for the purposes of war go on to have useful roles to play in the future - example being RADAR used to find enemy planes now helps those jets flying back and forth taking people on holiday from crashing into each other.

War often speeds up technological innovation.

But overall war is bad ..:(

Interesting idea but where does such an exercise end? The Boer War? The Crimean War? Should an army of historians be employed by the state to search for the many historical acts of injustice so pardons can be issued and men who've been dead for decades or even centuries shamed?

I'm not sure that present governments should be passing official judgement on the acts of their predecessors in war ninety odd years ago.

You can have all of that without wars- or 'hot' wars at least, as opposed to 'cold' wars. The militaries of rival nations are always playing catch-up with each other to ensure nobody has the upper hand.

In any case, if a god came down and gave me the choice of keeping wars and benefiting from faster technological advances, or eradicating war from the Earth forever but losing out on some technological breakthroughs, I'd say 'fuck the war' faster than a heartbeat.

I like being able to cook food in 30 seconds in a "radar" box and I like being able to talk to people on the other side of the planet using my man portable radio.
    Bring on the destruction MUHAHAHAHA.;)

I prefer the technological advances and breakthroughs that the porn industry has given us myself ;)

Ah but without the internet, itself a military idea we'd still be stuck with cheesy 70's porn with big hair and bad music.

Just blow the lot up. The whole world I mean. No more suffering, no more wars, no injustice. Everyone gets nuked.

Sometimes I feel like this because I have mercy on people and think it would be best to put them out of thier misery.

What about the animals? :crying: Its a bit unfair to throw the baby out with the bath water.
