I've just noticed (very randomly. I'm trying to distract myself from some data analysis) that RLY and ORLY appeared to die a death here. Did it piss people off or was it just a natural death?

    ORLY? YA RLY! NO WAI! has died a natural death in a lot of places. just like all your base. as far as I've seen is only used in vaguely ironic ways now.

    bit weird that, internet language trends. just like the increased use of ASCII art on YouTube comments pages, depicting things like the 'ol middle finger salute. was around since before the internet, and has just been discovered by a new generation of youngins.

    I found out about "ORLY" and "FTW" from an online game called World of Warcraft. Did these originate from the game or from beforehand?

    Ah I remember the ORLY owl!! I was using a guitar forum at the time, lots of american kids on there. Every second post, the ORLY owl showed its face. Either that or they announced they had 'pwned' you (never quite figured that one out), or said 'yo mom!'. I kinda miss it :(

    ORLY, RLY, L33T p3wnd and PLD live in as some vestige of theor former selves on a forum I moderate for. They're acceptable on the odd occasion but there are a few people who could stand to learn some actual words and extend their vocabulary to include more than computer nerd net slang.
