And so I return to an old subject, in light of recent press stories.

What, if any thing, should be done about the situation in that country?

Allowing Peter Tatchell to do a citizen's arrest on him would have been good.

Perhaps arresting Mugabe next time he ventures out of his country wouldn't be a bad idea.

Who would arrest him, on what charges, under whose juristiction?

If there was an international warrant for his arrest based on human rights abuses, for instance. Like we did with Pinochet (until our spineless Home Secretary bowed to political pressure and let him go).

Applying a range of boycotts and sanctions as well as a full travel ban for the entire Zwimbabwean government could be a start.

one problem with the boycotts is that virtually notihng goes in or out of there of any value apart from food and it goes into the country

My guess is the lack of any viscous, black substance beneath the Zwimbabwean soil.

Britain should stay the hell out, it was partly Britain's meddling that helped Mugabe get into power in the first place.

Mugabe isn't going to live forever. The best we can hope for is someone sane coming out on top in the ensuing power struggle.

That reminds me of the old SWP poster during the invasion of Kuwait by Saddam, which said 'We wouldn't invade if Kuwait grew carrots' to which someone more intelligent than your average SWPer had added 'We would if were rabbits'.

Its unfortunately a bit like the situation in Sudan, everyone knows we should do something, but there really isnt any good solutions.

Stopping their cricket team playing in the World Cup would be a petty and small jesture but a symbolic one none the less.

We created the country, we have a moral duty to intervene and the Commonwealth should then help it to it's feet again. We alone should not, but the Commonwealth as a whole should assist. Forget economic sanctions, only force will remove this man.
