my sixth form head swore by it.
Being a student at University of Leeds I know research is at a quality of 5 but the computing department employed more staff for teaching 'support' to give lecturers relief and provide a better study environment for the student. Due to this the university gets a low score because a lower percentage of staff is submitted on the research front.
The cause means that a university with quality of research at 3 and a decent staff percentage submittedwill rank higher than what is a very good 5- research quality.
Leeds is a good place for a Computing student so the league table measurements are damaging it.
Just don't totally base your decision on it...
Some give extra points for things like the number of people who are the 1st generation into uni from their family, or the % of state school offers, or the number of ethnic minority offers. I'm not saying these things don't matter, but they don't make it a better course from the academic side.
One method I used was to ring up a couple of places that recruit graduate engineers (as I'm doing engineering) and said which uni's do your good graduates come from.
