All my local chippies over the years have done them. Our local one now will pretty much deep-fry anything you take in, except [I would've thought] body parts [but you never know!].

I used to love them, and deep-fried milky ways. They're very hard to describe, you can feel your arteries furring up immediately but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I guess they might be the kind of thing that either make you upchuck on the spot, or that you become perilously addicted to

    classic briggi :)

I haven't exactlt got the bottle to walk into a chip shop with a mars bar and ask "will you deep fry this for me?" just in case they wont. is it true that they taste beefy because they fry them in beef fat?

I've just put the chip pan on :thumb:

If you want to get your local chippy to fry you one up then you might have to spend six months sweet talking one of the employees. When I lived in Lancaster I went through that dreadful experience myself! They definitely don't taste beefy 'round here, but my local doesn't fry in beef fat anyway. I imagine the blinding sweetness in addition to the greasiness would cancel out any meaty undertones anyway :p

I assume the mars bars are battered first. Like a marsbar fritter?

My favourite used to be deep fried crunchie.

I used to work in a chip shop, many moons ago, and we tried all sorts of things deep fried - even malteasers (they were fiddly!)

The wierdest thing I've ever eaten from a Fish and Chip shop was a battered Haggis sausage in Scotland. Good shit though.

Never tried one but my local chippy up north used to do them. To be honest though, the best thing they did was deep fried curry/gravy battered buns! Fuck me they were a delicious heart attack.

Our chippy fries in dripping and will fry anything you want- deep-fried jam butties are a speciality.

A deep-fried mars bar is a bit too much of a near-death experience for me. You can actually feel the grease clogging you up.

I thought about having a deep fried pizza when I was in Scotland last, but it looks too much like a cow pat.

Deep fried mars bars are good, but you need to sit down afterwards because there is usually a period of shortness of breath.

They melt inside a bit but the batter protects them. However, cook them for too long then they totally melt and aren't as great. There is a knack.

I used to cook them when I worked in my chippie.

I believe the deep fried mars bar came from scotland. They deep fry everything.

I remember once in school someone suggested them and the teacher asked who had ever had one and shouted at them. Saying how gross and disguisting it is and how bad it is for you and that none will be made in this school till the day she leaves.

But hey, never tried one! (don't fancy trying one either)

Oh come on, he has a point!

So the Scottish don't deep fry everything, but they certainly deep fry a disproportionate amount of things compared to other areas. In most of the chippys near me I can't even get a normal grilled burger because they're all deep fried. Pizza slices are almost always deep fried in chippys too. It's difficult to get normal sausages that haven't been battered and deep fryed. The list goes on.

If you want a normal burger/pizza you more often than not have to go to a kebab place.

Oh, and I've had deep fried mars bar once before. I quite like it, but I wouldn't make a habit of it. This thread is making me want one though.
