Anyone here in the police? Or tried to join? Just something that i've looked into. Doing a computing course at university at the moment but have always been interested in joining the police, maybe in a more specialised role.
Anyway just wondering really if anyones in the police force or if you know someone whos in the force and what its like and all that.

I think the recruitment process in Scotland is different to England though so I dont know if any of the stuff I know would be relevant to you.
He loves it. You have to be prepared that it kinda takes over your life though with long shifts.
If you're a graduate you can sometimes get onto a kind of fast track system which gets you to a more specialised role much faster, so that would be worth looking into, the person I know doing that did Maths at uni so it's not only applicable to 'relevant' degrees.
Otherwise my mates seem to generally like their jobs, shift work has it's ups and downs, you get a certain degree of flexibilty and get things like weekday daytime to yourself which is nice, but then you get long nights followed by kids playing outside when you're trying to sleep in the day time, which quickly turns you into a knackered and grumpy beast.
The overtime pay seems to be pretty good, but lots of them seem to be pretty dependant on getting it.
I swear they have more time off sick than anyone else I know, but in fairness that's probably because it's a very demanding job that you need to be fighting fit for. It also carries more risks than most, the baddies don't tend to like it when you get in their way and have a nasty tendancy to take it out on you.
Sorry, that's mainly waffle but hope it helps a bit.
Ahh that may be a problem for me then, i haven't got the greatest eyesight in the world.
Was only curious about it for now. Cheers though guys
The pay is okay - reasonably increments each year. There's also the fast track scheme, which I don't think is linked to qualifications any longer; if they see you have potential, they'll move you up quicker and there are various bonuses along the way.
It's good career to get in to. There's a mile long application form to fill in though where you have to list everyone you've ever spoken to and their families, etc!! They have to make sure that you're a good citizen before they take you on I suppose.
As for eyesight - mine is pretty bad, but the application tells you how good it needs to be. When you read the letters off the board in the opticians (you know what I mean, right?!) you have to be able to read the second line from the top (so, the second biggest letters) clearly WITHOUT specs/contacts. Also, you have to be able to read the second line from the bottom WITH specs/contacts.
When you apply, there's a part on the application where you can opt in for the fast-track scheme - saying that, you only get the opportunity to actually apply for that if they are impressed enough with you throughout the application stage and then they will offer it to you. They send you to Uni - even if you already have a degree, you can take it further.
Good luck if you decide to go for it.
Ahh thats good then, im not that blind. Well i have another three years of my course left so will be a while yet, but im interested
Wow I must be really blind then becuase I cant' see anything further than a foot in front of me in focus without my glasses.
Depends on the kind of friends you keep i would think.
I can't believe that getting into the police force seems to be so difficult, how interesting! I always thought that judging by the amount of lumbering, unintelligible buffoons roaming the streets of Newcastle in uniform that they were taking pretty much anyone [and Northumbria Police are supposedly up there with the best of 'em]
Then I realised how corrupt they are around here, and I got arrested for possession of Cannabis so I kinda don't have a choice now anyway.
Arrested? Fucking hell, didn't think they'd go that far for possession! How much did you have?
Coppers only tend to socialise with other coppers.
You'll find out.
He already polices, just he doesnt get paid for it.
He has both as friends. I still have friends too who know what he does, and it doesn't bother them, don't see why it should.
I don't have majorly dodgy friends
Got it in one mate.
Second most hated people after Traffic Wardens.
Fucking pigs...
As I said, you'll find out after a couple of years.
But why would it matter if his friends were all police? I have no problem with that.
Didn't think so, just one of the many corrupt and illegal things the Police round here do.
If you want to lose all your other friends, fine.
