Im 17, 5 foot 1 and I weigh 10st. that’s pretty bad isn’t it?
I was just looking at some holiday pics of me in my bikini last summer and I cant believe ive put on over a stone since then!!!
I suppose I was swimming every day and eating healthier, and I would like to do more exercise but I can’t because a) expense and b) time.
Anyways I was wondering do u think there is a “fat gene”? I have always been a bit chubby and when I was only eating two meals a day and going to the gym every day in a desperate attempt to get thin, I only got down to 8 ½ stone. My mum is also quite big and she hardly eats anything.
I wouldn’t say that I am fat, just a bit podgy, if u looked at me, u definitely wouldn’t say that I was 10 stone, but it still bothers me because I suppose its not exactly healthy.
Does anyone know where u can find that graph chart thing online where it shows whether ur obese/ok/underweight etc?
And also do you think that I should see a doctor if im 5 foot 1 and 10 st???

Bad news I'm afraid! You eat too much for the amount of activity you do. It's simple.
Do the ELEM diet ....Eat Less Excercise More.
Excercise .... expensive? Ever tried running, situpe, aerobics at home... its not too expensive it's just you can't be bothered that's all.
How much is 10 stone in pounds?
If you've tried diet and exercise already, maybe it's not the effort, but what you're doing.
Lots of girls get really freaked out if you suggest weight training because they're worried that they will look like a man.
The truth is that unless your lift weights four or five hours a day 5 days a week b/c you lack the testosterone to put on really bulky muscles.
But every pound of muscle you put on will increase your metabolism.
So try to regulate your diet and mix up aerobic exercise with light weight training, and I think you'll have good results.
I did a little to much drinking and not enough working out when I was a freshman in college, put about 20 pounds. I dropped the weight I put on in about 5-6 months doing this.

Byny - what is your problem? you don't know me or what i eat so if ur just going to suggest that im a lazy slob then why bother posting at all!? FYI im trying to sit 4 A-levels at the moment so i can go to university... i dont have much time for exercise. as for the expense thing, maybe i should have explained it in more s i m p l e terms: i think things like running around the block are boring, i would prefer to go to aerobics or yoga classes or basketball where other people are there to motivate you but yes those are expensive!!! and i do sit ups, leg extentions and 30 mins cardio each day (or i try to) but it still doesnt seem to do anything, thats why i asked about the fat gene. so get off my case - theres no need to be so rude!
Alex - 10 stone is 140 pounds. yeah i heard about the weights thing, but doesnt muscle weigh more than fat? and if i was to start doing weights wouldnt that mean putting on more weight? i remember when mel c started doing weights and she was heavier than she started.
I agree that it is easier when you have money. I really enjoyed going to the gym cos it was so luxurious and there was sexy men there! But if you really want to get fit and lose weight you can do it whatever. I made suggestions before that you could try. Even if you have exams, you need to de-stress, exercise is a great way to do that. I'm sure you don't spend 24 hours a day studying (I know I didn't when I was doing A Levels!)
The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even if you are just sitting on your arse all day.
If you start doing this routine, in the very beginning you most likely will lose a lot more weight in fat than you will gain in muscle. Don't forget that lifting weights is also exercise that burns calories and that also uses calories to rebuild the tiny tears in your muscle tissue that cause them to get bigger. I'm now at the point where I get heavier from lifting weights because I don't have as much fat on my body as before but the way to prevent that is just to reduce the amount of weight and increase the repetitions.
If you do this along with 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise a few days a week, you should see results within a month or month and a half depending how often you go.
Don't worry, you won't get bulky and manly!
hmm i was under the imression that whatever ur weight was, as long as it was overweight then it was bad. so it looks like weights are the way to go!
Alex - yes i want to be thinner but also weigh less because i thought it might be dangerous being that weight for my height.
so weights yeah? i have dumbells so i can do those but what about legs and bum?
You will be very sore if you do not stretch. This works your hamstrings (back of thigh), gluts (butt), and your quads (front of thigh).
Try this before and after you do this exercise. Lay on your back and slowly pull one leg slightly bent at the knee to your chest (slowly if you don't want to hurt yourself) and hold it for about 30 seconds. The straighter your knee is, the more stretching of your hamstrings, the more bent, the more you stretch your gluts.

Hey Alex, seems like theres another sports and fitness mad freak round here..... glad to meet you. What sort of training do you do? And looking to the future - I'm designing a sports specific fitness website, and once it's running it will need regular content - more than I can write on my own.... If you can get a friend to start doing this with you, the two of you can motivate each other...that's how I got started.

I'm kind of getting back into the swing of things workout-wise, I used to be in incredible shape in high school but I really got lazy my first few years in college. I've been going to the gym five days a week for the last 18 months or so.
I try not to get into a set routine, I find it gets really boring if you do that. So I mix in a good run once or twice a week (3-4 miles-nothing crazy), a couple 2000-3000 meter swims when it gets warmer, or I use the aerobic machines at my gym.
I lift every time I go to the gym. Anywhere from one to two hours, and I vary day to day by rotating muscle groups.
What do you do?
If you ever do get that website started, I wouldn't mind writing for it, but I'm not an expert, I just have a decent idea of what to do, mainly from other people.
Back before I got the illness, I had to fit it round lots of stuff, so my schedule was like this:
Mon: Volleyball training – team orientated Wapping 8pm
Tue: Volleyball training – skills orientated Whitechapel 8pm
Wed: Weights – Lower body Plyometrics Alleyn’s
Thur: REST and Fencing
Fri: Weights – Upper Body and Cardiovascular Alleyn’s
Sat: REST
Sun: Matches
Allthough the schedule was far less than optimal as I had to fit it in around lots of other things. Every now and then in the holidays I will train 5 times a week using different days for different groups with variation from week to week in their orde to ensure I get 3 days rest between doing a group twice. this normally happens when I go up to Leicster to meet my best mate - we just eat lots and train for severall weeks.
PS I won't be able to offer you any money to write for the website, it's purpose is to help people improve their sports specific fitness and provide a site where they can find all their related info under one roof rather than to make a profit. Chances are I will end up laying out a fair amount of money each year keeping it running, unless I can get the English Volleyball Assosciation or someone similar to sponsor me.
The money thing is okay, I didn't expect any, anyway. The idea for the website is great, though, because whenever I look for fitness info on the web I always end up at sites that don't offer info, just their "miracle" products.
I looked for info on creatine for a couple of weeks once and couldn't find anything but lousy company sites with no info whatsoever.
How do you train for volleyball without weight facilities? My understanding was that the sport required lots of lower body lifting to increase your vertical leap. (I had a girlfriend who used to play)
I trained for volleyball mainly using plyometrics and the squat machine which I can do squats and calf raises with. AT my volleyball club they have some nice bands to use as resistance for plyometric work. When I go off somewhere for training I do use free weights though...

And whats with selling the stuff in 3l packets when they are only 1/4 full? Creatine isn't as bad as protein supplements tho....

Alex, During the next Month I am producing a piece of coursework titled "The benefits and drawbacks of using Creatine supplements on Volleyball Training". While not exactly your area, most of the points will be the same, I will also add stuff about dosages, loading and maintainance cycles.

For all these stick thin people out there 'shut up' everyone's different. Some just need more help than others.
I actually went on it for a few months and was impressed with the results, but a couple things sucked.
You have to drink water like a fish (I was drinking up to 2 gallons a day)
It's expensive.
