Lost Mobile Phone

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Do you think if someone finds a mobile phone on the ground it's finder's keepers or do you return it to the owner if they've called and left a message of how to contact them?

I've found about 2 phones before and in both cases looked for the word HOME on the phonebook, rung it and they've come and picked it up

    That's very good of you.

I'd probably keep it, cause I lost mine a few months ago, it was only a week old and I looooved it, but I called and no-one answered. They took the sim out and I never got it back.

I'm also rather selfish. :) If it was a shit phone I would call "home." :p

I once gave a phone back (and got a caution for handling stolen goods!) and I once kept one.

    Huh?

You gave back a phone and got in trouble?

Care to explain a bit more? :chin:

I'd give it back. I've already got 3 phones, don't need anymore! Plus it's just not right to take things that people have spent their money on.

One of my friends found a phone once, and decided to keep it, he then started getting abusive messages from who I presume to be the former owner, was rather amusing.

It was ridiculous. I was only 16. I found it and took it home, was going to keep it but then felt guilty so I spoke the owner's dad, his daughter only about 14. I didn't want to tell him i'd found it and took it home so I made out I bought it off some geezer in the pub. He then asked me if he could ask the police to come as he thought I had been conned and he wanted to catch the man! I had to say yes and when I met them I had to sit in the cop's car. I then had to make some bullshit up about a stranger in a pub and then they said I was silly for buying it. They then proceeded to give me a caution!

I once found a random mobile phone. I looked through the numbers and it was all in a foreign language, weird symbols etc. It rang, I answered, asked if anyone spoke English, they found someone and they didn't speak English at all. Ended up taking it to my local police station and they tracked down the owner. It belonged to a backpacker.

It was quite an adventure and I was looking after 2 of my little cousins (aged 5 and 7) and they found it all hilarious!

Great thing about most older nokia phones, is that the menu setting to change something to english, is pretty much the same for every model :-)

God I've just remembered a bizarre story.
My friend lost his. The two weeks later hismum gets a text from his number saying we have your son's phone. They then give directions to a phone box and said it would be behind there. He and some mates went and his phone, albeit smashed up was there with a sim and a little note saying sorry for breaking your phone!

Yeah, that's true. This phone wasn't a nokia though. I don't know what it was - a make i hadn't heard of before. I reckon that either the family in whatever-country told them what happened when I phoned or that the backpacker went and reported it missing. It's only a small village with a local police station so it was a good bet, really.

Found two mobiles and in both cases they never got to their original owner.

First time, I actually found it whilst pissed, rang them up at 4 in the morning of the phone saying that I'd give it back. When I went to use the phone in the morning to ring it was blocked so the phone was pretty much useless.

Second time, was in a gig in the union, dancing away and saw a phone on the ground. Picked it up and showed it to my mates and asked if they owned it, no one did so I ran to the bogs, took the sim out and put mine in cos it was a class phone like. Turns out, all pictures were saved on it and it was the lead signer of the bands phone, he was prancing about like an eejit on the stage, musta slipt out while he was jumping about.

I've never found one, but on a trip to Alton Towers, my mate was pratting about and fell to the floor for me to take a picture, and her phone fell out of her pocket as she went down (you can see it on the picture as well, now we look!)

Anyway, we set off, then she realised on the rapids that it wasn't there. We've got a great rapids ride picture of her, on my phone, ringing hers repeatedly! Luckily, there was a family having a picnic that heard it ringing, and tracke dit down and called me back, and they waited for us to go and get it. Nice people :) She was so grateful haha. Serves her right for being a moose though ;)

Depends who finds it, i found one on the street not long ago, waited for the owner to call then they came and collected. I could have easily just ignored the calls or swapped the sim but i believe in karma :thumb:

In the summer I left my phone on a train. A guy who had been sitting next to me picked it up and he called "mum and dad" and got my address (and gave his name and address, which was in Manchester so I couldn't pick it up).

So I didn't buy a new phone, just waited for him to send it. Waited more than a week, kept ringing the number, text it, and it didn't come. In the end, I sent a SAE envelope to his address, and after a few days he sent the phone back. In the meantime though I had had to go out and spend £60 on a new phone! It was still nice of him to do so..I was more upset about losing all the numbers, texts and photos than the actual phone.

I found a phone in the local park once when I was out with the baby, I called the number as dad home and managed to find out it was some little girl on my street.

I went and gave it back. The mother insisted on me having a fiver lol, I said no but she was like ooh have a drink on me etc lol.

Phone didn't even look like it was worth that much.. but very nice gesture.

I found a phone on the floor a couple of weeks ago, I just went and handed it in. It never even crossed my mind to keep it.

That's what happened to me the first time, the guy insisted I take a £5 note and I kept telling it wasn't a problem .... and in the end he shoved the £5 note in my top pocket and ran off.

The big gesture I ever saw was when I lend my cousin a phone and I just that morning wrote our home number under the battery - he left the phone along with his laptop on the bus and someone found the laptop and phone and saw the number under the battery and my cousin was able to pick up both from his work.

I think if an item can be traced then it's right to give stuff back.

Okay, to be honest, those of you who said you'd keep it, that's horrible. You're not much better than the ones who'd pick it out of someone's pocket.

^ I agree. Fair enough to keep it if you can't track down the owner, but to just take out the simcard and put your own in... that's pretty low.

i'd try to contact the owner or someone else in their phone book.

i've found a phone or 2 on a nightclub floor and handed them in somewhere. my friend lost her phone in a club once and someone handed it in. i know i'd hate it if someone didn't hand mine in so i always hand one in if i find it. :)

Got more chance of platting piss than someone handing in a phone thats lost where I live.
I know lots and lots of people who have lost phones in clubs, pubs etc. and I can't re-call any of them actually getting them returned to them.

    ive lost my phone twice.
once was in our union and it got back to me in the morning when i went and asked at the help desk - which was v v lucky. apparently someone had handed it in

and the second time i left it in a uni taxi that went from union to student houses around town - i KNOW i left it in there yet the firm denied finding it. so i guess they were lying, or someone else got the taxi and nicked it. some people are bastards!!

never been in the situation where ive found a mobile phone tho. if i was to find one tho i would see if there was a home phone and get it back to tem

I've never found a phone, I feel so left out. Though if I did I would probably just leave it there and pretend I never saw it in the first place.
