Getting Asked For Proof of Age

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
Why is everyone going mad over proving your age?

Ever since the new licensing laws came out everyone keeps asking me for ID.

Even went to Asda last week and the woman asked the man infront of me for ID to buy some wine, and he was like in his 60's!!

A girl in Morrisons said to me "can I just confirm you're over 21" when I was buying beer, I said yes, she didnt ask for ID. Then she asked the guy behind me who was clearly ancient!

My Dad got asked for his birth certificate when he was buying glue in a DIY shop :crazyeyes

I got ID'd for a lottery ticket a while back, I wouldnt have minded *that* much but boy asking me was about 12.

How amusing. i've not noticed this increased vigilence yet. Maybe it will be in our local asda soon.

how old are you diamond geezer?

most stores now operate a think 21 policy where the cashiers are required to ask for proof of age if you don't look over 21.

I've not been asked for ID in a shop before but I do think it is a good idea that they are being extra vigilant.

We are asking more people if we aren't sure if they are old enough as WE get fined if we sell to someone underage.

I ALWAYS get asked for ID. I go to the same pubs most weeks and they ask me everytime. I said to them once that I had shown them the last 4 weeks and they must know I'm over 18 now and all they say is "I don't care, if you don't have ID you can't come in". Guess I'll appreciate looking young when I'm older :D

there are 'fake buyers' about who are underage to try to catch you out. If they do (and they're allowed to lie about their age if you ask them) then it's an on the spot £80 fine. Not the kind of money I have lying about :(.

if i have the tiniest bit of doubt in my mind i ask for ID. its not worth the risk. i cant afford an £80+ fine. i asked a 30 year old yesterday... but she did say she gets asked everywhere and she takes it as a compliment. imo, people should carry ID, so if they cant get served its their own fault coz they should have ID.

I'm used to being asked now. I carry the photocard part of my driving license in my purse anyway, so can prove my age when I need to. I'd get more worried if no one ever asked me cause they all assumed I was 40+

I went in to Wetherspoons for lunch with a friend, we both got asked for ID, even though we ordered food and no alcohol lol

Thats because alot of pubs you have to be 18 to be in them weather your drinking or not...

My local weatherspoons lets familys in during the day, but in the evenings its only 18.

I haven't been asked for ID for years. The 7yr old child in tow, shouting "mum, muuuum" at me is a bit of a giveaway.:grump:

Our Tescos has had 'Think 21' for a while now, 6 months+ easily. Is it £1,000 fine if you are caught selling to an underage person?

A couple of years ago I had to argue for a couple of minuets before I got in to a over 25's area in a club, the best thing was my mate who is 2 years younger than me didnt get questioned, it made my day.

I never had problems getting served when I was younger I got served in pubs from the age of 15, mainly cause Im tall, obviously I was selective where we tried to get served but still it was most pubs apart from the busy city centre ones.
Thats over 10 years ago perhaps they were more likely to turn a blind eye to teenagers having a couple of pints in those days.

The only other timer Ive been ID I was 22 and with a couple who were in their 30's and we all got ID by some girl who it was her first day on the job

I get ID'd constantly and I LOVE it. Alcohol in shops, bars, restaurants, cigarettes, lottery tickets, tipp-ex... pretty much everything.

It's an endless source of amusement to my boyfriend and his mates who all look 40 odd... I take it as a huge compliment, it's not an issue as I do always have ID anyway :)

I only usually work on a bar for private parties, so I don't have this problem. I got ID'd by my own cousin the other week. He wasn't looking, just asking people for ID on the door in Yates. I handed it to him and he just started laughing.

    I fooking hate getting ID'd. I get ID'd EVERYWHERE.

When they asked on Friday night outside a pub I handed over a perfectly legitimate Provisional Driving License.

'So this makes you how old?'
    -19
    'What's your birthdate?'
    -13/01/87
'Do you have any alcohol in that handbag?'
-Er no. I have a DVD. Look *waves Spaced dvd in front of them*

    Fucking rude.

I know, I don't mind being asked for it, but I hate it when you get bouncers (usually) that are really arsey about it.

I suppose places are just trying to cover themselves. I don't object to being asked, as long as it's done in a nice way. In the pub the other night the barmaid (who looked about 18) asked me and my mates (all 23/24) really patronisingly for ID, despite the fact we were all drinking soft drinks.

Feel a bit sorry for underage kids now, how can they have those classic teenage moments of sneaking into bars/clubs underage? Missing out on all that excitement.

So true. I only really started getting IDed when I was about 19.

I don't know I used to look older, or if they just never used to care as much?

they are not allowed to lie about your age if you ask them, if they do then when the police come to prosecute you, the case would fall apart on that fine legal point

well not really coz, if you say are you 18, and they say yes, you still shouldnt serve them unless you seen proof. i was told they are allowed to lie about their age

No they're not. They're trying to change the rules, but they're not allowed to lie at the moment. We always know when they're out anyway, because we tend to get anonymous tip offs (from the other pubs). And why do you get fined for selling certain age restricted things and not others? Would you get £80 fine for selling a kid porn, or an 18-rated video?
