When I first moved in, one of the girls had brought a couple of bottles of bubbly, which I thought was a nice idea because we all just sat round the kitchen table with a glass each, kinda like 'here's to us' as we got to know each other.

Obviously we all went down the union later, but it was just a nice first thing to do, as we got the 'what's your name, where are you from, what course are you doing's out of the way.

If you do take something with you as an icebreaker, I'd say wine or bubbly is best because most people (in my experience) will have a glass to celebrate, but vodka, tequila etc, you either like it or you don't. You can go get hammered on that stuff later.

It really does depend on your individual uni, for example our union wasn't open for most of freshers week (certainly not the first night) so having alcohol with you would be handy! Check if you need to bring cutlery, pots, pans, tea towels, washing up liquid etc. Computer and printer are extremely helpful if you can afford them. Check if you need to bring your own bed linen as in some halls you won't have to. Basic things like soap, toothpaste etc. you can worry about nearer the time. But the handiest things I would say would be laptop and a printer, you don't need them but it certainly makes life easier!

Make sure you take stuff to make the room yours as well, it took me ages to get mine looking like it was mine.

Photos is the obvious one, but cushions and throws are good too, a rug maybe. Loads of people had a plant or a bonsai tree sitting in their windowsill. The girl that moved into my room after me had cut out loads of leaf shapes in different colours and stuck them onto the walls, which looked really good. Fairy lights are always pretty too. Some of that is probably more applicable to girls though, heh.

We also all stuck coloured paper over the cork boards (which were just bland cork coloured) which brightened up the room a fair bit.

Chances are that unless it's a relatively new building, your room'll look pretty dismal when you first get there, so they sooner you can make it yours with little personal touches the better, imo.

I've compiled my own checklist from looking around different sites, and I can safely conclude I will have to do without quite a lot of the recommended items, mainly because I can't afford to buy them all. The best suggestion is to talk to current and former students, so coming to this site was probably a good idea.

I'm dreading meeting people for the first time in halls, but that's something I'll have to deal with myself. This is what I want help on. It's fairly clear that alcohol is a pretty central part to student, which is where the problem lies. I can't drink any alcohol at all. Because of medication, if I drink virtually any alcohol, I end up being violently ill. Is not being able to drink alcohol going to be an impediment at Freshers?

Apologies once again to Charli, hope this doesn't derail the thread.

While a lot of the events at freshers week are geared towards drinking i dont think its the be all and end all. One of my flatmates doesnt drink, but she still made an effort to go to all of the bars/clubs but just didnt drink. She had a good time because she made the effort to go and get involved..just dont stay in because you dont drink is what i'm trying to say.,...freshers week is what you make it, with or without getting pissed

    me too it's vile.

but a lot of people would down a glass even if they didn't like it.

makes it an expensive drink to down!

Probably the first thing we've ever agreed on! :p Last night, I was at work, and someone came to the till saying "I've got money to burn, give me some expensive champagne". £26 bottle expensive enough?

    £26 bottle is cheap champagne.

Alcohol is a great social lubricant, but isn't essential for you to have fun during Freshers week. As long as you're friendly and willing to get involved, you'll have fun. If you're a shrinking violet, you won't. But Freshers Week is a small part of the university experience.

Guys, would it be a good idea to bring a bottle of bubbly or tequilla :yum: or somthing to break the ice with my flatmates, or is it a bad idea?

This is always, always a very very good idea.

I made so many friends just cause I had tea and chocolate hob nobs. Yess!

while a lot of people do drink loads in freshers week, it doesnt make any difference if you dont. you can still go out and go to the events and have a brilliant time. to be honest, people probably wont even notice if you're drinking or not and noone will be bothered if you are or not. just make sure you make the effort and say hi to people and get to know them. join some clubs and societies too. it is hard and scary, but everyones in the same boat and while its so easy to sit in your room on your own, you dont want to do that. you're not going to click with everyone, and theyll probably be a lot of people you dont like, but in order to find the people you do like you're going to have to put yourself out there and make the effort!

as for things to take to uni, i think pretty much everything has been covered. but if you forget things, its not the end of the world! there are obviously going to be plenty of shops where you are, so you can just get things there. i didnt buy much kitchen stuff until i got there and waited to see what other people had brought.

Drinking is definitely not the point in uni. But ya gotta admit that having something to drink round your flat is a great way to get people round and socialise.

I just did it with tea, instead.

I was on really strong anti-biotics for Fresher's week, so I couldn't drink. It made no difference whatsoever. I have friends that didn't drink before uni, and they've not had any problem either. A guy in my flat was completely tee-total, and wasn't into clubs and all that scene, and whilst he didn't come out with us we still got on great with him and he made all his closest mates through the societies he was involved in.

It might seem like everything's gonna be geared around the nightlife in Fresher's week, but there's still events during the day - Fresher's fairs, etc, and opportunities to go learn your way round the campus and the new city with your flatmates, all that kinda thing, if you're really anti-nightlife. Obviously though, there's nowt stopping you going out and sticking to soft drinks, which is what I did, and I spent the week as the one that held everyone's hair back as they were throwing up, making sure everyone got home and to bed safe, etc. Ah, the memories.

The only thing that will be an impediment at Fresher's is if you isolate yourself from everything that's going on. You'll be fine.

    i just remembered...
    FANCY DRESS!
I would say some form of dress up, especially that of a pirate, is essential.
And sweeties. they break the ice just as well as a beer (i was known as the one with the alcohol when i arrived coz they say me carting the crates u the stairs...) and leave u on a sugar high, with no hangover the next morning. and in my opinion, someonw without a hangover is a godsend, coz they can make the tea.

If you're taking fancy dress, take something for halloween as well, some devil horns or something.

What I've noticed is that devil horns, fake vampire teeth, fake blood and other Halloween goodies, can usually be bought at places such as pound shops. They're pretty cheap if you know where to look.

pots and pans, plates, cuttelry, tea towels, kitchen rolls etc etc,

id say take a huge pack of loo roll with you if you dont have a car as its cheaper and awful to lugg from the shops if your walking,

i think a crate of beer/ a few bottles of cava or something is a good idea,

    posters, photos, throw, cusions,

an extension lead or 2 (halls are usually set up stupid and have like 2 plug sockets in them)

a million and 1 tins of beans/ spag hoops/ tinned tomatoes/ chilli etc that you will struggle trying to carry from the shops when your shopping for yourself and will be usefull if/when you run out of cash

and dont forget cork screw, tin opener, bottle opener,

and i second whoeversaid any random fancy dress outfits you mite own :D

    have fun
