People don't use it to mean a 'pet' which is 'owned'. The term 'birds' is used for all women, not just for those in a relationships and 'owned'.
The vast majority of birds aren't kept as pets as anyway.

I don't think "bird" implies being owned, even if it is used in the "my bird" context. It has the meaning that you yourself imply to it; if someone wanted to read offence into "pumpkin"/"turnip"/"jellytot" then they could.
I'm starting to think I quite like it, actually. I agree that it's far better than "chick" which is ubercheese.
