money or happiness??

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
maybe should go in the work forum but i think it's better suited here.

ok, would you rather work in a job that you hated and made quite good money or work for less and be completely happy at work.

I think personally that i would take the money, after all you aint at work all the time and you can enjoy your other time more with more money.

What got me thinking was that im applying for a new job and dont know the salary yet, im considering taking it even if its less than im on now, because i pretty hate my job, its just that i dont think its right. hmmm

    Happiness.

    You cant buy it.

unhappiness at work, tends to spill over into my private life quite easily unfortunatly.

Then your very lucky. Whenever i'm unhappy in/at work as rainbow says it spills over into home life. but i guess it would depend on how much money i was getting from it. If it was crap loads then i'd put up with it fro a while, save the money then get a job that makes me happy

Happiness. I quit a job last summer without a new one to go to, as coming home in tears every night just wasn't worth it, even though the money was good. Also, you do spend a reasonable amount of time there, so I think its important to be happy.

probably just deal with it differently.
I can be a bit too sensitive at times unfortunatly.

Happiness. Without a shadow of a doubt. I would rather be in a job i loved and being happy than having money. I am doing this at the moment. I work in a very low paid job but I choose to do it because I love the job and like the people.

That's a no-brainer for me, happiness and less money.

happiness definately! i worked in a place where the job was fantastic, great money, but the girls in the office were two faced b*tches, I much prefer the job I'm in now, rubbish money, and the work is awful, but the people are great! I'm still looking for a combination of all 3!

ive actually been more unhappy than i currently am in this same job, thats only due to the fact our business slows down a bit after xmas.

If it wasnt for some of the great people that i work with i would have been out of here a long time ago.

i think im still gonna persue this other job that i want tho, obviously if its a rediculous amount of money less i wont take be able to afford to take it. if it works out at a couple of quid an hour less it probably wont make much difference.

happiness. i actually cant do things i dont enjoy, so even if i was getting shit loads of money, if i didnt like it i just couldnt do it. although, if i liked the people i worked with and it was the actual job that bothered me, i could maybe stick at it.

i didnt expect such a one sided oppinion, personally i only go to work to earn money, and while im there why not get as much money as i can (this is my thought at the moment, but considering changing for my sanity)

    happiness. no contest.

i am actually sticking at a not-fabulously paid job atm because i like the company and i like the people.

money is nowt if you hate every minute of the day.

The thing is, if I end up in that situation, I would get out of it immediately. I would either get a raise or file a resignation. I wouldn't be satisfied with a low pay.

But then again, what is a "low pay"?

    Hypothetically, I would choose happiness.

Seen a thing on T.V. bout this yesterday. Well I wouldn't want to live in poverty but I'd rather have enough to get by and be happy than be filthy stinking rich and feeling bad about everything like.

I actually had a trainee job in a hairdressers last year, and even though it payed peanuts I loved working there cos there were so many regulars and they were really lovely people. My boyf on the otherhand is in a job that pays him a lot but he doesnt like working there - he stresses about it all the time. So I choose happiness.

    Happiness.

My philosophy in life is to be happy. I would rather be earning a pittance and enjoy what I am doing rather than working for 50k and hating every single second of it.

Being happy in your work is important as you can then leave it behind when you leave the office or wherever. If you are unhappy at work you will just be unhappy all the time. You will leave work in a foul mood, go home, have a moan about it, go to sleep dreading the next day and dreading the alarm going off.

I would rather choose the poor wage than the above :thumb:

i would love to say happiness but for me i suppose that isnt really true as i absolutely adored the job i had before i went to college. I left it so i could (in the long run) earn more money!

hmm i think i disagree, i think money could buy happiness.
ive only been in this job for a year and probably hated it for the last 6 months, but i dont let it ruin my private life, well i dont think i do.

but maybe you lot are right, better to be happy then get paid more.

having said that i wouldnt get up and go to work for less than £14k

I think your alone on this one Skittles.

i think you are probably right, but oh well, everyones different i guess. i think it stems from the fact that im from a very socialist family who believes that everyone who can should work, wether its hard graft or not etc..i would never not work even if i came home in tears everyday. its just one of those things.

like i also have a strong disliking for people who are able to work and dont, but thats another story.

fortunately, such people are a lot less common than the daily mail would have us believe.

im inclined to think the opposite, i think their more people getting away with it than should, there was some stat in our local paper the other week that like 60% of unemployed people in my town are on incapacity benefit, there is no way that can be true. i say make them dig a hole and fill it back in if they want their giro. (that last sentence has some humour to it)
