what are your thoughts on prostitution?

Following on from Al's thread i just wanted to know what people's thoughts were on prostitution, not so much regarding the legislation although that does overlap, i want to know why why do you think it is so prevalent in our society, according to the BBC nearly 1 in 10 of us pay for sex today, does this surprise you?......would you pay for sex, is it just a harmless bit of fun? or would you offer it for a price? what would that price be?
i know it's not straightforward, personally i don't think any woman in their right mind would choose to sell their body to strangers as a fulfilling profession, it's alleged (for the most part correctly i think) that prostitutes exist because they need the money to live and can see no alternative for getting it, but....
what i noticed in amsterdam was quite strange, while some of the women do seem desperate (banging on the windows from inside their cubicle and whatnot), over there it is regarded a lot more as a real profession, not something done just out of desperation but also out of choice.......for example a student might do it during the holidays to pay off their debts etc, because if they took a "proper" job it would take weeks/months to earn what they do in days, it's completely normal......i have to say i found that quite shocking, how these young girls could just shag one 50 year old after another, seemingly not bothered, i could be wrong of course but go over there and have a look for yourself.......i'm sure they don't plan on telling their kids in the future or making a career out of it, but sex is viewed now as just another commodity........
do i want to see that situation over here? what i'm saying is i can see the argument for legalisation and the obvious analogies with drugs, so in one way i am for it as we all have the right to individual liberty, but in another way i am appalled that
a) i live in a society where women/men view themselves so cheaply, and
b) that there is such a rising demand for this "profession", what does this say about the way we view each other, as people or as an object with a hole/nob? is this healthy?
i'd consider myself fairly liberal but when sex is taken out of any meaningful context, surely we are not in our right minds......? not that it matters, soon we'll all be able to buy an orgasm down our local supermarket anyways.....

how clean?
Almost makes you wonder how people survived before they discovered alcohol and the like
along with sex of course.
a tune comes to mind ...
...driving dangerous girls across dirty sheets.
I consider sex to be part of love, but I don't see why my belief should be imposed on people who don't see it that way. I think decriminalising it would help regulate it and keep workers safer. And I don't think the girls that do it should be attacked. After all, it's not the prostitutes that are creating a demand for this type of business.
there are actualy women who do choose this as a carear.
top money can be earned.
most of them probably don't like their work tpo much ...not many other people like whatever work they are doing either.
but ...there are carear prossies out there who chose.
I see lots of women in court up on charges of loitering (ie prostituting), most of them are drug addicts, have had kids taken into care, they are not a happy bunch. I find it sad that they sell their bodies for as little as £20, it's so dangerous.
If I found out that someone had been to a prostitute it would put me off them, it's horrible to buy someone's body.
Also, if they are attacked and abused by someone, she will have legal rights and as such, they are far better off, as you can't over there expect to abuse a prostitute and get away with it. Indeed, the police will clobber you.
It is sometime seen as a necessary thing for poorer women to make money... but alot of women chose it. Alot enjoy it. Especially I suppose a nymphomaniac.
Quite... Prostitutes are often scared to come forward, because they were engaged in an illegal act at the time. It may also put people off using them, or they may be forced to stop doing their job, due to its nature.
It's a terrbile mess something that something like this, which has nearly always been around, is illegal, and causes so many problems... when it could just be legalised were we not such a bunch of stuck-up snobs, trying to pretend.
The place I went to was very hygienic, very secure and discreet.
I wanted something, someone was offering it, I was willing to pay for it, job done.
I guess in this case I'm in favour of some kind of licenced prostitution - and the licence should be granted to establishments where it can be proven beyond reasonable doubt that all sorts of standards are maintained with regards or cleanliness, employee safety, that sort of thing in a similar vein to how public houses get their licences.
I'm not comfortable with street prostitution at all though. Too many risks for both parties IMO.
I don't see anything wrong in prostituion but then again I wouldnt want anyone I know to do it.
I have never been to a prostitue but then again I don't judge people that do. Though I do wonder if it is a good and right thing to do.
I agree with legalisation and liscening of prostituion and would want to see a crackdown on sex traffickers and pimps.
Street prostituion I am not to okeen on either but then again, not every girl could get a job in a brothel, though a hell of a lot more could get in a proper place if it was legal.
I have seen programmes on brothels and prostituion etc. Plenty of the brothels i have seen have happy girls who want to do the job,, though one programme did have this old, knraled bitter woman who had been a pro for years but couldnt get any business now coz of her age, it was quite disturbing to see.
I expect you also think that all them women in porn films are really having orgasms too?
And there are different forms of prostitution. Theres street prostiution, theres massage parlours and brothels, theres escourts, theres 1 and 2 women private setups.
you can't tar them all with the same brush.
Yeah right.
Unless their client was bothering to pleasure the prostitute, I think an orgasm is unlikely.
How could you tell whether or not an orgasm was real on the telly or not?
So midwifery was a 'profession' before monetary systems were introducted?
I believe that prostitutes are victims. Victims of abuse, victims of "society", victims of whatever you want to call it.
How would this work?
You mean all of them?
Why?
