    I am getting a book called 'Understanding Syntax' for Christmas.

    The structure of the above sentence can be bracketed like so:

    [S [DP I/PRO] [VP am/AUXBE getting/VERB [DP a/DET [NP book/NOUN [ADJP called/ADJ 'Understanding Syntax']]] [PP for/PREP [DP Christmas/NOUN]]]]

    Syntax is sentence structure and word order. I'm doing it for my degree, I really like it. So far, at least!

    This is the book, but you could also try this one which is our set text for Syntax. It is degree level though. It's probably not worth thinking about it unless you are doing English and Linguistics degree though.
