Problems updating direct x

Bought a game for my PC today (Imperial Glory) and have been having some problems getting it running. Basically, when I update direct x and then restart the computer, loads of messages appear saying "Windows could not update %1 to %2".

I can't run the game as direct x appears not have been updated...

I'm somewhat at a loss here, any ideas how this can be rectified? I have no idea what these messages are about, but it happens quite a lot when i'm installing or updating other things (usually it works fine despite the % messages, except with this specific software).

    I've had a problem with that DirectX aswell on other games. Never loaded for me either.

    There's plenty of nerds on this site who'll help i'm sure.

    i had this prob on my xp pro ...not had it since service pack 2 was installed.
