Its good to see the centre left in Germany coming under pressure to such an extent that Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder is having to call an early general election.
North Rhine-Westphalia, the most populous state in Germany, has for the first time in 39 years kicked out the Social Democrats and turned to the Conservatives.
The result was:
45% Christian Democrats
37% Social Democrats
6% Greens
Is this a foreboding as to what might happen in Britain next time round?
It was interesting to read that German industrialists are calling for a sharp dose of Thatcherism to curb union power and generate healthier competition. What sensible Germans.
More and more people across Europe are becoming disenchanted with Socialism and are moving toward sensible centre-right parties for salvation.

At least you give me a laugh...
I'd think about rephrasing that line if I was you. Rightwing risings in Germany tend not have a well-regarded history...
It does look like he is in trouble though, he has brought the election forward.
If they hadnt had to join with East Germany again they would have been much better off.
RK do you actually know anything about German politics?
The whole reason that Schroeder is almost certainly going to lose the election in Germany is because he is implimenting Thatcherite reforms on Germany.
As I recall, it's called Agenda 2010 or something like that and is very unpopular with Germans as it attacks their welfare state, cutting back unemployment benefit at a time when German unemployment is at record levels. There are also moves to encourage private savings in pensions.
German people are not voting for the CDU because they're disenchanted with socialism, on the contrary they're voting CDU because they blame the SPD for these Thatcherite reforms which along with other factors such as the Euro have contributed to the highest levels of unemployment in Germany since the 1930s.
Hence it is fairly obvious that an historically left wing state with one out of the five million unemployed would vote against a so called left wing government that is enacting Thatcher style reforms.
Incidentally, I would point out that although Germany is going through a bad recession at the moment, they are still a richer nation than we are and have a better track economic track record because of their socialist roots.
I would suggest that Germany at the moment is at a similar point that Britain was in circa 1982, unfortunately Gerhard Schroeder can't invade the Falklands to give himself electoral victory!
According to an Express headline I saw on Sunday we are about to.
I saw that too, what a waste of money! But I suppose if there wasn't all that oil we wouldn't bother would we? :chin:
As Thatcher did in 1982, which won her the 1983 general election.
Apparently they are just itching to steal it back and being crafty and evil foreign folk we must stop them, our brave boys will do the job.
I should point out again at this point that this was a story from the Express.
Apparently those Agentinian devils have their sights set on the Falklands because for some wierd reason they think that actually they are theirs, and not ours.
Surely after one bloody nose from Maggie they won't come back for more?
According to the tag line I read because I was amazed at even the Express was that troops are possibly going there because there is a threat again. Its not going to be from the Belgians is it?!
No one it was daily mail style bullshit. The article took tings from past articles, made alot of shit up and was ridiculed by the MOD.
OF course they wont. They know they can effectivly win them back on the negotiation table with the EU.
And the europeans care about that why?

Remember we are governed by the government who ignored a refrendum in Gibralter over the issue of shared sovereignty. What does new labour care about the Falklands?
The Falklands will remain British, like Gib will, entire the majority of it inhabitants don't want it too. The benefits of better relations with Argentinia (or Spain) aren't worth the costs to any British Government of being seen to act against the wishes of people who want to remain British.
The election hasn't even happened yet. Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
how come England has been in the best economic state ever in its' history and how come the English economy stayed strong after 9/11 where everywhere else failed...because of the tories...no of course not....
You are talking about New Labour arent you?
