But really I do really think it is shite that students have to get themselves into tens of thousands of debt before they even start their careers! The government is looking towards a 50% of school leavers entering Uni. Most of whom won;t qualify for the bursary supposedly beng introduced!
Then there is the increase in fees. As a Labour Party Member I have to agree this was an embarrassment! They technically may not be top-up fees, but they are top-up fees by any other name!

Manchester is an ace city. Moss side and parts of Salford are what gives Manchester its reputation for being a rough city, but on the whole it isn't. It has everything - an Airport, Metrolink system, multiple Universities, brilliant nightlife etc. So long as you have basic common sense, you're unlikely to encounter any violence while you're here.

The thing about the new system is that everyone will be paying the tuition fees. It won't be means tested like it was before.
I was extremely lucky. I went to Uni the one year there were absolutely no tuition fees because of the changeover in the system. There was a loophole
Nah Manchester aint bad. Area I live in we've had 2 burglary's in 15 years, and they were both on Christmas eve just gone, thought to have been the same person.
I've never seen a fight kick off when I've been out drinking in Manchester, which for every other city and town I've ever been out in I can't say.

Scottish Exec is increasing the money for each student to £1,900 [up from £1,150 at the mo] for each year to their university. This is to try to allow Scottish Unis to compete with their English counterparts. The graduate endownment is still payable to some students [currently £2,000] at the end of their degree, and this means that they have to either pay it out all in the oner or take a student loan for the amount with the same terms. Basically meaning that the Scottish graduates instead of paying £4000 or more after uni, they only have to pay 2000. For details go to the student awards agency graduate endownment site.
Scottish domiciled students pay NO tuition fees [at any time] and at the moment there are no plans to introduce them.
Please read this thread. I have quoted both the Scottish Exec and the BBC website. I am not talking "rot".
The Scottish Exec may still be paying for your education at the time you go to uni but you still need to pay them back in the form of a Graduation Tax. It is a posh word for "tuition fees". You still need to pay but instead of paying before or during uni you pay afterwards. English students don't have Graduation Tax.
It is quite worrying that there are Scottish students, studying in Scotland who do not know all this.

I do know this! Graduate Endownment [not tax] is paid for the "benefits of reveiving a degree". The £2000 is for four years! Some English universities will be charging more than this for a year!! And the list of people that do have to pay is quite small:
You will not have to pay the endowment if you:
*are assessed as being independent of your parents at the start of your course;
*are eligible for the Lone Parents’ Grant at some point during your course;
*are eligible for the Disabled Students’ Allowance at some point during your course;
*are on an HNC or HND course;
*transfer to your degree course directly from an HNC or HND started before 2001-2002;
*take less than two academic sessions to complete your degree course immediately after completing an HNC or HND;
*take less than three academic sessions to complete your degree course in all other circumstances;
*are taking certain degree courses that attract an income-assessed Scottish Executive Health Department bursary, such as nursing, midwifery and courses for the Allied Health Professions;
*fail to meet the requirements to be accredited with a degree;
*have studied for a degree in a publicly-funded higher education institution before;
*are studying at a UK institution outside Scotland; or
*study part time.
This money goes back into the pot to allow the bursaries and tuition fees be paid to the next generation of students. The graduate endownment is not tuition fees! It is quite worrying that someone doesn't understand this.
At the end of the day education in Scotland is not free, as many people seem to think. You still need to pay for it. You pay the £2000 or whatever it is when you finish your degree. However, if you don't finish your degree you still pay the tuition.
Education is not free. Simple as.
I was an extremely lucky one. I entered Higher Education in 2000 which was the year that the old and new system didn't cover.

No you don't!!!! I don;t have to pay as a student nurse, my optometry colleague doesnt have to pay and if you only do a three year degree you don't pay either, nor if you don't finish!
