Just curious to know how people are placed into universities: do you apply for the universities and they get in touch with you saying whether you are accepted or not or is it something else?

Simple really.
You get a conditional offer. That is, on the condition you get certain specified grades, or better, you will have a guaranteed place at the university in question. Each university will reply - they'll either reject you, or give you a conditional offer.
If you have an unconditional offer, and you choose that as your first place, you automatically go to that uni. If you have conditional offers, then you choose which uni you'd most prefer to go to (first choice) and then the next uni you'd prefer to go to (insurance choice).
The uni's will give you grades, which they want you to get. If you get the grades to meet your first place you go there, if you don't but get your grades for the insurance choice you go there. If you don't get them grades you can go through clearing, but you'll learn all this before you apply.
