As Halloween is coming up, it’s important to stay safe while having fun. Whether you’re trick-or-treating, going to attractions, or enjoying a night out, these tips can help you celebrate responsibly.

Trick-or-Treating Safety
Even if you feel too old for trick-or-treating, some people still go, and it’s important to stay safe. If you’re responsible for young children, stick with them and plan safe routes. Always cross roads carefully, look left and right, and use proper crossings. Be mindful that you’re taking treats from strangers — check them before eating. Stick to well-lit areas, travel in groups, and stay aware of your surroundings.

Halloween Attractions & Events Safety
Halloween events and attractions can be really fun, especially for fans of the spooky or scary theme. However, they can also get overwhelming or disorienting. Watch out for trip hazards in dark areas, and take breaks if things get too intense. Children or anyone sensitive to scary themes may need extra support, and it’s important to stay with your group so nobody gets lost.

Alcohol & Night-Out Safety
If you choose to drink during Halloween, do so responsibly and enjoy yourself, but know your limits. Don’t feel pressured by friends or peers to drink if you don’t want to, and it’s completely okay to stop drinking at any time. Respect others’ choices as well. Keep an eye on your drinks at all times. If you need to go to the toilet or step away, ask a friend to watch your drink. If you’re going out to house parties, pubs, or friends’ houses, plan your journeys carefully. I’d recommend lifts or taxis, especially later in the night. If those aren’t available, be cautious when walking or using public transport, and always stay aware of your surroundings. Road safety is important — use crossings, stay on pavements, and watch for traffic. Be wary of strangers in general. Try to have someone with you when going to and coming back from outings to stay safe.

If Trick-or-Treaters Come to Your Door
We may get people knocking on our doors asking for treats. It’s great to give treats, but there’s no obligation or pressure to do so — only do it if you’re comfortable. I know answering the door can be daunting, and it’s completely okay to not answer if you don’t want to take part. There are signs you can put on your windows to show you don’t want to take part, which can be helpful. From previous experiences, sometimes people might knock anyway — they might think the sign is old, miss it, ignore it, or assume they’re an exception. It’s okay to say no or not answer the door at all. If there’s no answer, the visitors should leave the property.
