Autism poem

Invisible_meInvisible_me Posts: 352 Listening Ear
Autism... the scary, crazy thing,
Autism... the thing we avoid.
Autism the thing we disgrace...
There are special truths hidden beneath the dirty graze

You may think we are weird,
Full of "shyness" and an "ignorant creature,
When really...we are unmeddling,
Of our brains wired a unique way

Understand the biting anxiety,
The wanting need we are afraid to say,
Due to the judgement of you, yes you.
We just need a reasonable adjustment to survive

We may require routine and sameness,
That's not because we are "boring" or "inflexible"
It's because I need to plan,
Who, what, where, when, why, how,
To turn the "switched off light, on"

We do not socialise the way you do,
We may not understand your gifted skills of communication,
That doesn't mean we "don't care or talk or mute"
I have a different way of saying ,"hi, how are you"
Take the time to hear silent voice of actions, its new.

We may do repetivity,
That doesn't mean I'm a crazy nativity
It means we've listened to what you've said
And yeah.. my memory has gone "wow and again "

Sometimes were shouting,
Sometimes were throwing,
I'm sorry I dont mean to be a nuisance,
I'm just in invisible pain!
OUCH!

We may have sensory overloads,
Where I cannot process the world's load,
Thst because we have an abundance,
Of the gifted senses bunch..
See, hear, smell, taste, touch things differently to you.

Sorry for being embarrassing,
We are sorry you fear of us,
We don't mean to be an inconvenience,
Oh no...
We just need your EMBRACE

Autism is not a label,
And oh no, not an excuse!
It's an understanding of me to you,
Hold, embrace, care and support... will you?

.....would you like to add a verse on?

@Invisible_me , thank you so much for sharing this - it's really powerful!

This part esspecially stood out to me:
We do not socialise the way you do,
We may not understand your gifted skills of communication,
That doesn't mean we "don't care or talk or mute"
I have a different way of saying ,"hi, how are you"
Take the time to hear silent voice of actions, its new.

This feels so important to remember and to know.

This poem is beautiful and well written too. It definitely depicts the autism experience very well and I could see myself in this poem.
Just a person who likes pop culture and films
