Social issues and overthinking

TheNightmareTheNightmare Posts: 3,361 Boards Guru
I struggle with social situations and often overthink interactions, especially with new people. I tend to avoid speaking up, relying on others to order for me at cafes or restaurants, and I feel anxious when I have to interact with cashiers instead of using self-service. I often compare myself to others, especially when I see people with jobs, even in entry-level positions, and feel inferior. I worry about what others think of me, particularly regarding my job situation, and fear people think I’m not trying or failing. I’m sensitive to people doubting me or discussing my situation, which worsens my anxiety. These feelings extend to my home life, where I worry about visitors, like window cleaners or tradespeople, judging me for not having a job.

Setbacks, both socially and personally, have affected my self-confidence, and I still struggle with feeling positive about myself because I don’t have a job yet. Negative experiences, such as being laughed at by school or college staff, have also contributed to this. I tend to dwell on mistakes, like forgetting work or facing awkward situations, and this makes me anxious. Despite all of this, I’m pushing myself to improve. I’m trying to go to the shops on my own and occasionally challenge myself, like with drive-thru experiences, to work on my social skills. I want to feel more positive about myself, recognize my achievements, and stop being so harsh on myself, even though my current situation is tough. I know I’m making progress, and I’m committed to continuing to improve.

    hey @TheNightmare 🙂

it sounds like you’re being really hard on yourself, but honestly, i see so much strength in everything you just shared. the fact that you’re actively pushing yourself, even when it’s uncomfortable, shows real resilience. social anxiety and self doubt can be exhausting, but you’re facing them head on, and that’s something to be proud of!

i know it’s easier said than done, but please don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. everyone moves at their own pace, and remember your progress, whether it’s ordering for yourself, going to the shops alone, or tackling a drive thru, is just as valid and important.

the things people have said or done in the past don’t define you. you’re growing, learning, and proving to yourself that you’re capable. try to give yourself credit for the wins, even the small ones, because they add up. if you ever need a reminder of how far you’ve come, i’ll happily remind you!!!!

i’m so proud of you <3
