Worried about getting my first job.

NJosh9000NJosh9000 Posts: 1 Just got here
I’m 18 and living in student accommodation right next to my uni.

I really want to get my first job because I hate relying on my parents for money, but the whole idea of it makes me super anxious.

For context, I have learning difficulties and a speech delay, which makes finding a job feel even harder. My biggest worries are:

• I’m convinced I’ll mess up the interview.
• I’m scared I won’t understand simple instructions.
• I might struggle to understand customers.
• I sometimes stutter when I’m stressed.
• I worry people won’t understand me.
• I don’t want to keep asking for clarification.
• I don’t want to feel slow or incompetent.

I’m looking for jobs that don’t require an interview and don’t involve dealing with customers. I thought about warehouse work, but I’m not sure how I’d handle the late shifts or the physical side of it.

Also, I feel like I’m really behind. Most people my age started working at 16, and I’ve never had a job. I had two whole years to get one, but my anxiety and struggles with speech and learning held me back.

Does anyone know any jobs that might suit me? Or ways to make money without a traditional job?

Hey, i dont know how to help you but just wanted to say it’s totally fine and probably quite normal to have never had a job yet at 18! I’m almost 20 and can’t even imagine getting a job lol. There’s no rush <3

Hey, I hope your doing okay ❤️
I know how finding a job can feel scary and anxiety provoke, especially considering the extra worries of your learning difficulties and speech delay. I was thinking does your university offer jobs on campus for their students - i know this is what my university provided. Additionally, is there anyone you could speak to or see at uni to help with things like interview prep or help you get accommodations at work to ease your worries etc (when you have a job)

It is also completely okay to not have had a job at 16 like others or have a job currently and it will come along, there's no time limit on finding a job, just take it slowly, no rush ❤️

hey, i am sorry to hear that you are feeling anxious about this rn! i totally agree with @AnonymousToe, although you may feel pressure to get your first job, it is totally normal to have not had a job yet and the fact that you're considering getting one shows real courage and motivation!! But it is so important to go at your own pace> The application and interview process can feel super scary and overwhelming however often any interviewers will expect you to be nervous and will try make the process as relaxing as possible.
I definitely think that it is worth checking out any campus jobs like @Lottie5433 suggested as they will be specifically designed for students and the university will want to help. Ik at my uni they lots of job opportunities and one of them was to reply to new students questions on the website so that is definitely something you could look into if you'd prefer a job without speaking in person to customers. My uni also offered practice interviews and loads of career advice so definitely worth looking into!
I hope you are feeling slightly better about job searching, but honestly the main thing is to not rush and you'll find something that suits you, i am sure! <3
