TW: racism and violence
Aware today is the last day... but is anyone going to Notting Hill Carnival or has anyone been in the past?
It's one of the world’s most diverse celebrations, and we've put together a guide below on how it all started.

Notting Hill Carnival
In the late 1950s, there were a series of racist attacks in West London, causing the murder of Kelso Cochrane in the 1959 race riots. In response to this, Trinidadian Activist and founder of The West Indian Gazette Claudia Jones, created an indoor 'Caribbean Carnival' at St Pancras Town Hall.
Community Activist Rhaune Laslett, known for addressing and easing inter-cultural tension also planted the seeds for Carnival, by hosting a children's street fayre, to promote multi-cultural unity in the area.
The first outdoor festival took place in 1966, in Notting Hill. Russell Henderson and his Trinidadian Steelband took to the streets, weaving their way through Portobello Road as a trail of locals spontaneously gathered and danced in thge street to the sound of pan. The first Notting Hill Carnival was officially born.
Notting Hill Carnival comes mostly from Trinidadian origins, however in the 1970s we saw the introduction of the Jamaican sound systems, creating a rich blend of Caribbean culture, now imbued with the modern essence of London.
The celebration now hosts over a million attendees every year, and takes place around the streets of West London.
Carnival hack: pick a meeting point in advance for when you inevitably lose your mates in the crowd. We advise that you don't reply on phone signal!
Carnival takes place over the August bank holiday each year. Saturday is Steelband competition day! A ticketed event. Sunday is Family and Children's day, and Monday is Adult's Day, both free! If you're after a more chilled NHC experience, go for family day on Sunday. If you like the sound of a hard-partying parade, make sure to go on Carnival Monday.
