I think its up to you how you want to talk about what you're going through, its whatever makes your feel comfortable when discussing your mental health.
From past experience when I have spoken about mental health with my friends I have used wording such as "my mental health has not been very good" so in your circumstance as an alternative if you wanted to use this you could say "before my mental health became worse".
But again its discussing it in a way that you feel comfortable, hope that helps
