I'm feeling worried about my future again

TheNightmareTheNightmare Posts: 2,587 Boards Guru
I don't know what I am going to do, I do have a ideas in mind but I feel like I'll fail and people say try stuff but if it doesn't work out I can lose hope. I don't know if I'm going to do well in life tbh. I just don’t know. I feel like everyone will overtake me and stuff. I want to do something with cars but don't know what. I just hope I do well like make decent money and have a good career where I'm happy. I just don’t know how it will happen.

    Hey @FordRanger,

I can hear that the future feels a little uncertain for you right now, and that you're afraid of failing or being overtaken by others. I can understand how that would be scary for you, Ford.

You've mentioned that you are interested in cars. Would you like to tell us a little more about that interest? Is there anything that particularly interests you about them?

I wanted to mention the National Careers Service to you, Ford: https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/contact-us. They can give you a chance to speak with a trained careers advisor on the phone about your future options. How does that sound?

    Take care,
    Harry

I get how this advice is frustrating. People used to say this to me and it just felt like I was throwing darts with a blindfold trying to figure it out. But honestly, once you try different jobs, the advice does start to make more sense. Because while it might not work out the first time or the second time, you're always narrowing down what you're interested in and what you want to pursue, making it more and more likely you'll find work you want to stick with.

For example, you might try a job in retail, then realise you don't like working in shops but you do like talking to people. From there, you can look at other jobs that involve talking to people, and you can rule out working in shops.

And I don't know how helpful this is, but this usually takes people a long time. I have friends who are 27/28 now and they're still trying to find jobs they like. People I've worked with who are much older than me are trying new things, too. There's no right way to do this and don't be fooled into thinking everyone else has it figured out, because they definitely don't. :)

What careers have you thought about that involve cars? That sounds quite broad so there might be a few things you could consider - driving, engineering, mechanics, design, sales.

You've taken a brave step reaching out for support here @FordRanger . It seems like you are not sure about the career path and your feelings is understandable.

You said you have some ideas in mind but afraid it'll fail. Can you tell us more about why you feel it'll fail?

I can understand the feelings because many of my friends are facing the same worries and problems. You can explore different possibilities and don't have to make a lifelong decision so soon.

It is good that you have already thought about roles related to cars. How have you found it reaching out to the National Careers Service?

Hi, I have thought about different careers with cars like what you mentioned. I wanted to do mechanics but I did it for work experience and it was good but wasn't as enjoyable as I hoped.
