    It might be worth continuing to talk to him but give him the space he needs - effectively a break without labelling it as such. 

    Continue to keep in contact, talk as a friend and support him. He's likely going through a lot and if you've both got a lot on it could be very overwhelming. 

    Right now as it's long distance he can possibly see it not working out but when you get back in visiting range it could change things. 

    It's worth talking to him and telling you how you feel and being extremely open and honest. 

    Tell him what you've told us - you're heartbroken and believe a break would be better than breaking up. Tell him why you think this. 

    Keep us updated as well :)
