Need help for my brother

Hi my 22 year old brother has a drug and alcohol dependency. He also, as a family believe, has an underlining undiagnosed mental health issue. Last night he sent messages to everyone saying goodbye and mum found him
With a large kitchen knife. We called the police as he left the house and we didn't know where he had gone but as soon as he was back in the house they left! We can't seem to get any help/ support for him. any advice on where we should be contacting would be great.
