Improving memory and concentration

There are, as far as I'm aware, many issues here. This may be quite long.

I've had quite serious memory issues for years due to a head injury, which means that I can switch from one task or conversation and not remember what I was just going. Strangely, I can remember certain conversations from years ago - usually stuff I want to forget.

I, according to a friend of mine, also tend to discuss the same thing that we discussed a few weeks ago. I don't actually remember discussing that. Admittedly, I'm not too sure how much of that is part of my Autism and my narrow interests.

According to the leaflet that with my medication, there's a chance that my memory and concentration may be affected.

I've had to take a break from a group I attend on a Wednesday (the only way I can comfortably socialise) because of my memory and concentration problems. Part of the problem is my hearing. For the last three years, it's been too sensitive and has been getting worse recently. I can't have anyone sat on my left side because it's too off putting to hear their voice in my left ear and everyone else in my right. I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to stop playing because I've got really lost. This is a recent thing and sometimes happens with older songs too. It's not something that doctors take seriously and I was told my hearing would be ok in a few months. That was 2012. It has got much worse.:crying:

Hi Melian, I'm sorry to hear about your situation, this can not be easy for you.

Your not on your own as there are a lot of people who have memory and hearing problems but its horrible to still have to everday u have to battle with this. I'm sorry that the doctors haven't been much help. Have you tried seeing a hearing specialist instead?

I have noticed that you are no longer able to attened your group that you attended before. Although I'm not saying this is something you should do instead but there are charities out there who can help long term in varies ways from workshops, trips out, activies and therapy support. I don't know if that maybe something you could look into? Also about your memory and concentration, did you say it was part of your Autism? If so are there ways which can help you to remember things like diagrams or words? Relaxation techniques and exercises?

It maybe a good idea to go back to your doctor and mention about your medication as it may have an effect on your memory and concentration and wether you could be put on another form of medication. I think write it down first and when you see the doctor give it to them so they know about it.

You might find these websites helpful to have a look at...

    www.autismuk.org.uk

    www.nhs.co.uk

    www.mindbodyandsoul.co.uk

    www.deafassociation.co UK

These might or might not be any use of help but it's there if you need to have a look at them.

    I hope that helps

    Hugs x

There's no other medication I can go on. I've tried everything else, which either doesn't work or leaves me with some really horrible side effects. (As does this one. But they are for the more part ok, as long as I take other medication) I am limited to what I can take due to my asthma and the medication I take for that, which I obviously can't come off.

I have already seen two hearing specialists. I was diagnosed, given advice and told it would clear up and I would be ok. I wasn't too bad until Christmas, I seem to remember.

(And I think I've missed a lot. Will post more when I'm home tomorrow evening)

    Hey Melian:)

Im sorry to hear about your head injury - that sounds like it must have been quite traumatic, you poor thing.

The thing with head injuries, is that it can affect whole areas of the brain sometimes, and these effects can come to light a few days/weeks/months down the line. When you had your injury, did you talk to anyone about symptoms that could happen to you as a result of this? If not, perhaps it might be worthwhile speaking to your doctor about the injury and the problems you are having with your memory/concentration. They can refer you onto specialists who might want to look into this further.

It's worth bringing up the side effect of your medicine as well perhaps, as well as the problem with your hearing becoming more sensitive. It's definitely worth getting checked out - there may be things they can do to help you with this, so you don't have to put up with it

Let us know how you are getting on *hug*

Thanks. After the injury, I underwent a test on my brain. (in short, they thought I had epilepsy) The effects weren't apparent until some years later when I started to get migraine.

It's only been over the last few years that I've really started to have issues with memory. I know that when I get depression, I end up with huge gaps in my memory. But this is different.
