Shame to see him leaping on the dumbing down bandwagon, i thought he was better than that.........:(
Listen to Roderick Floud, he knows what he is talking about..........:)
Thats odd, when the Tories alone suggested it it was disgusting and wrong.
Weird.
the university funding debate isnt all about either more tuition fees/more students or less tuition fees/less students, because universities are barely funded realisticaly not including research grants since the amount given to them to teach stuents should be is minimal and has been like that for years, see i have no political party that agrees with my views, though i tend to the centre-left
the way tuitin fees, well actually the amounts should be changed, the amount universities get for the student and from each student total should be increased, but students from richer backgrounds should pay a higher percentage of tuition costs, since £1125/yr is nothing for a student whose parent earns £70000/yr compared to £1125/yr fees for someone whose parents earn £28000, only relatively obviously since poorer students have it worse unless your parents are super poor (< £13000) then you get maintanence grant plus full loan andno tuition plus a bursary fund if you ask around the univerisites
after tuition fees are sorted out (it jsut seems nothin will be sorted ever with any party!) then you can ove onto livin costs
What degrees do you consider to be useless? What will you be studying?
im quite sure a degree in kite flying at thames valley univeristy is pointless! or any degree there, from what i hear it does no decent courses to a decent standard of teaching! the money could be better spent for example on increasing the number of possible places for medicine degrees, because we need doctors and thats the starting point,so few places for it, i think only 10 places teach it, so people need 3A's and not even all of them get in, nor the people with AAB etc of which im sure many more people could do!
my mate does music at Thmaes Valley and he is a music genius so i don't think the balnket critiscism is valid.
It isn't as simple as throwing money at it. Even if there wree more courses i would imagine they would still want 3 A's because you need to be very clever to be doctor. Even if you had more money you are not guaranteed to get the lecturers, tutors and other staff you need and it is not clear that we need a lot more doctors, even if everyone who wnated to be a doctor could become one would there be enough jobs?
yes i know people need to be clever to be doctors thats obivous, but the amount of people who are intelligent and skilled enough to do it who want to do it, is far more than the possible amount of places, that is all i was saying there
and my other point was that universities in this country are cash strapped, and you saying throwin money isnt the answer, my reply is that universities in this country are suprisingly efficient with ther money, and that they NEED the money still,a minor increase in spending on them for them to do relevant courses for people who will go the distance and finish would benefit this country greatly i think personally
My point about money was not a general one but aimed purely at the medical profession you highlighted.
If I give the unis more money for medicine can you guarantee that a) they can get more teachers, lecturers etc? b) they can fill the places (I would imagine so) and c) that there will be jobs for all these doctors when they finish uni?
it isn't simply a case of saying that seems useful we want more of them, the market for jobs and students works to adjust the numbers.
If you cut all the 'irrelevant' courses i would expect a lot of those people would not go to uni at all causing a further funding crisis and a less well trained populatuion...........
They move away from the so-called "elitist" meritocracy to a form of purely economy-driven education, where only the rich or supremely talented are given an opportunity to avail of tertiary education.
From a party supposedly dedicated to egalitarianism to this.
i think you will find a lot of sympathy for your views of the abour party on this board Raj..............
