    I thought that possession of marijuana for personal use was allowed by law in the UK too.

    Nope. It can still land you up to 5 years in prison (although in practice you are arrested and given an official caution by the police, which is still bad news because it goes into your record).

    There was an experiment where I live, in a neighbourhood in London, where the police were told not to arrest anyone for possession, simply to take the gear away. It worked fine and the police found themselves with more time to tackle proper crime. Sadly the ultra-right wing press mounted a campaign to stop the scheme and we're back to the old procedure of arresting someone for the grand crime of smoking a joint. :rolleyes:
