Guilty in Buffalo

One of six Yemeni-American men charged by the U.S. government with supporting al Qaeda was due to plead guilty on Friday, a U.S. official said.

Faysal Galab was scheduled to appear in court in Buffalo, New York, for a plea hearing on Friday afternoon.

He was expected to plead guilty to a charge of providing material support to al Qaeda, the global network of radical Muslims blamed for last year's attacks on the United States and other attacks, according to a source in the federal prosecutor's office.

The charge carries a possible sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

One of his buddies was assinated by our drone plane in Yemen. Love it!

Well, it's interesting for me to discuss current events. And these bastards were going to do something in NYC. They went to Afghanistan to be trained and everything.

The Muslim community in their town helped turn them in. Plus emails.

And you were the one posting not too long ago about how people are guilty in the media long before anything is proven in court.

Have you stopped to consider that many of the arabic individuals you see accused in the papers might be convenient - and with CIA involvement quite easy - targets to keep the "overwhelming Al Qaeda threat" myth foremost in the public mind?

Have you considered how easily you are willing to believe that every person claimed to be in league with Al Qaeda is truly linked as the government claims despite the fact that already cases have occurred where our government has ruined people's lives permanently without sufficient proof (as in the case of the UK resident Algerian pilot I posted about a couple weeks back) and how even yet with such false accusations, our government has made no attempt to apologise or clear the names of those who they have wrongfully accused?

9/11 has given McCarthyism not only a new constituency to victimise but has deadened public scrutiny and vigilance against abuse of government power to the point where hundreds if not thousands of decent law abiding people will be or are being imprisoned on contrived charges and without the right to review the evidence against them thanks to the USA Patriot Act.

In Bush's America one need only be accused to be guilty when it furthers our corrupt leaders' agenda.

This terrorist cell wouldn't have been broken up without the Muslim community in NY. I'm glad they're reporting that. And that help from the American, Muslim-Arab community is something Osama didn't count on.

Ah yes, and of course, citizens pointing fingers at citizens could not possibly have any other ulterior motives than good civic vigilance eh?

    Naive, sooo naive.

Just be careful you dont make any vengeful enemies who might accuse you of involvement in some nasty plot or another. Under the DHD youd never get to see the evidence against you anyways despite the fact that our Constitution has always ensured the accused of the right to adequate defence.

One coward is turning state's evidence. He's going to tell on the whole group in order to get a reduced sentence. Since they have evidence that they attended an Al Qaeda training camp in Afghanistan it's gonna be bye-bye for most of their lives. I wish they'd try them for attempted murder too.

hk, I meant people "informing" (aka accusing) others to our new McCarthy police state (aka The DHD) for whatever reason they choose.

The Bush administration has revived the era of paranoia most Americans should recall (historically if not first hand) and which they should be condemning en masse.

pnj might swallow whatever the media tells him as gospel truth, and he may think our government is right and good and true and would never railroad or harm its own citizens and legal residents, but he's young and too naive to see how dirty and underhanded Washington is and can be in the furtherance of its own agenda.

Best way to manipulate public sentiment in favour of their continued right wing warmongering abroad is to foster fear and paranoia at home. The best way to do that is to have almost daily reports of "enemies within" being rooted out and rounded up.

Since very few (the media foremost amongst those to their shame) are bothering to raise their voices to demand full accountability and concrete proof from our leaders, so of course they can quite easily carry on with profiling since noone will bother to check if those whose pictures are splashed all over the press and television are not in actuality just poor decent joes who are being wrongfully accused.

I have little doubt that our administration has merely found a new way to repeat the internment process carried out against Japanese Amricans during WWII in a more socially acceptable fashion with bogus claims of terrorist cells around every corner.

I only pray that Americans will wake up in sufficient numbers so that we might force Bush and his daddy's corrupt cronies to give as full an account of their actions and intentions as they are demanding of the Business leaders. After all, why should those elected to serve the citizens of our nation be believed when they act as if they rule over us and have no need to back any of their accusations (domestic or foreign) with concrete third-party verified evidence?

To claim that such evidence cannot be shown for national security reasons is the oldest smokescreen in the book and only serves to lessen our national credibility whilst suggesting that it is our leaders who are hiding something that the public they are sworn to serve has a right to know about.
