Should the government ever legalise prostitution?

I say yes, it should. It would be prudent to do so.
It's time the state started to emphasise the social freedom of the individual.
Actions between consenting adults (providing they don't infringe on anybody elses rights) must be no business of ANY government.

it happens whether you like it or not. If it's legal, you can do a much better job of protecting the women, ensuring they work in safety, etc. if it's illegal there's nothing you can do to set down parameters.
It's like all these things, like pot or abortion or, if you're incredibly old-fashioned and weird, homosexuality; it really make no difference if you have a moral problem with the people who do it. IT EXISTS! it will continue to exist. So do the best you can to keep it safe and minimise any damage you think it will cause.
did anyone see the c4 documentary? I suppose the guy who started the thread.
Erm....women sell their bodies for sex, yes I can see where the respect comes in.:eek2:
word of mouth, i found, works just fine.
and to whoever said that these women are "just selling their bodies for sex" or whatever, its not especially commendable work but not every prostitute is one by choice.
Have you ever been to central London and seen those cards in the phone boxes? Is that not advertising?
To my knowledge, I don't think it is legal for a person to flagrantly advertise sex (for example, somebody couldn't put an ad saying 'Sex for sale' in their local paper).
it's bonkers. BUt I suppose they stand to lose more votes by legalising it than they do through not.
Not all prostitutes are women or is it somehow more sociably acceptable for women to prostitute themselves but the thought of male prostitutes still feels a bit uncomfortable?
I think it should be legalised. On the whole its a victimless crime and would free up resources.
The idea of the police being able to help out those with problems although commendable is a bit far fetched. The police are there to nick people and thats all they're concerned with.
The majority of prostitutes in Britain are women; I'd think that is fairly evident.
Nonetheless it is true that rentboys and male escorts exist, yet they aren't as common as female prostitutes.
what a great idea. Tony Blair could be Mr Big, the main pimp
And if you mess with any of the girls or refuse to pay after a service he'll send John Prescott to rough you up...
