pat robertson; or, the devil

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
has anyone heard of this guy?
he's insane. I mean, really, truly, insane. I've been in the US for a while and he's the face of the hard christian right. he's very rich and has his own christian current affairs programme, quite widely watched, called '700 club.' he's seriously old school: homosexuality as an absolute evil (he says there'sa strong corellation betweem satanists and homosexuals), demonic possession as an explanation for psychological disorders, wives subservient to husbands, the end of the world being nigh, and so on and so forth. He also believes socialism to be the work of the devil, and by extension considers most of europe to have strayed from god. he's certfiable. I was going to put the address of an anti-robertson and a pro-robertson site, but frankly there's no need for eth anti- as his homepage speaks for itself:here
(One great touch: amongst all the religious stuff, there are pat robertson age-defying shakes and pat robertson age defying anti oxidants available. frankly, tehy ain't all that great, because ol' pat looks like an overdone baked potato.)
What's scary is that this man has a serious following in America. Men like Bush and Newt Gingrich, whether from a genuine affection or fear of alienating republican voters, have praised him. THE MAN'S A FRUITLOOP! HE THINKS SCHIZOPHRENIA IS CAUSED BY DEMONS! HE THINKS FRICKIN' GHANDI WAS A PRECURSOR TO THE ANTICHRIST! HE THINKS EVOLUTION IS A BIG HOAX INVENTED BY OL' POINTY TAIL!
I am not at all an anti religious person. I think religion can be a wonderful thing, can offer tremendous solace and strength and meaning. But the fact that people like him are getting taken seriously by anyone is a very scary thing. This is the same guy who agreed wholeheartedly when his close buddy jerry falwell -equally unpleasant - called 9/11 god's response to the 'abortionists and homosexuals and lesbians', who said that 'the termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation.' He's the kind of guy about whom you could make up pretty much any vile quote and attribute it to him and noone would be at all surprised.
The irnoic thing about him is, he's exactly the kind of guy with the most militaristic and aggressive possible approach to solving the kinds of long-term problems which lead to terrorism, and yet he's probalby the closest thing a western state could produce to a bin laden. He's a true fanatic, and he's about as unchristian in terms of love and tolerance and peace and generosity of spirit as it's possible to be.
(just so you know. but then you probably already did, so I'll fuck off now. hi, by the way.)

Yea, I've seen this man in action. He is either insane, or very clever. He makes a lot of money doing what he does.

South Park even did an episode highlighting how stupid the Christion Broabcasting Network (or whatever its called) is.

Is it wrong of me to feel that the words 'free' and 'expression' mean anything here?

Um, yes, it is, comlpetely wrong. Saying you think he's a mad fanatical bugger isn't the same as denying his freedom of speech. Just as people are free to say they think the end of the world is nigh, we're free to say we disagree.

Well I don't know what kind of laws they have down there, but some of his comments on homosexuals would probably fall foul of the law in Britain.

Actually I'm right to advocate free expression since it's a fundamental human right. :)

yes, it is, but it isn't relevant here because noone was denying it.
I mean, it's also true that dogs have four legs, but it has very little to do with this discussion.

I think he's insane, right, apparently god loves everyone, but gay people are going straight to hell!

I think it's the right-wing, rich, tax avoiding, intolerant and fellow man-hating bigots out there who have a fast track ticket to hell, if there was one. A single mother-turned-lesbian atheist would have a much better chance of going to heaven than idiots like this Pat Robertson.

Well Christian belief states that anybody who follows Christ's teachings will go to heaven. Even if an atheist has been 'good' in his/her life, they're screwed on Judgement Day. :)

Bah, what these fundamentalist bigots conveniently forget in all their judgementalism and self-righteousness is that Christ hung out with the very people they bash and actually condemned their counterparts of his day, the Chief Priests and Rabbis. Just goes to show you what Christ thinks of such intolerance.

    I agree.

Which is why I use my right of expression to point out that I find his views abhorrent. That I believe there is no basis for his beliefs, other than prejudice and that I believe that his approach is just as dangerous as people like OBL. The difference is that he hasn't yet got to the armed struggle stage...

to be fair, as awful as the guy is, I think it's a bit much to equate him with Osama. I mean, he hasn't actually killed anyone.
In some ways, he's easier to hate because he's more identifiable and it's easier to see how many people lean towards his way of thinking. BinLaden's more like an anonymous bogeyman, really.

Which is why I qualified my statement in such a way.

Osama uses religion to justify his own bigotted view, just as this guy does. I can see no difference there.

weel, your qualification was a bit limited - saying he 'hasn't yet got to the armed struggle stage' does rather imply you think he's going to in teh future. But this is quibbling, I suppose, so I'll shut up.
I think the biggest difference between them - and please don't think I'm defending robertson, because as you can tell, I'm not exactly a fan - is that Bin Laden just wants everyone hwo disagrees with him dead. Whilst RObertson is complete scum, I think at some level he would like it if everyone were to share his views. The fact that that isn't possible means he hopes we burn in hell; but he does at least have some vague hope of redmeption. It's very faint, but it probably exists. He's still a complete c unt, though.

Actually, Chritian teaching says that as long as you are true to your conscience, then you are welcome in your heaven. And God is omnibenevolent, so surely he'll forgive everyone!

Wrong. A belief in Jesus is paramount.

Well, that's alright then, on my deathbed, just in case, I could ask God to forgive me, until then I'll constantly slag off all major religions. None of them make sense...
