Just read this on Slashdot.org and thought you might like:

"The new 2.8GHz Pentium 4 has been officially launched by Intel today. Sporting a 533MHz System Bus, this new P4 looks to put the hurt on AMD's new Athlon XP 2600+. Benchmarks and a full review with performance versus AMD's new chip, can be found here. " - Monday 26th August

The Pentium 4 2.8GHz Processor - Overclocking The Northwood.. We hit 3GHz but not fully stable!

... and then the benchmark tests which prove quite interesting:

AMD 2600+ VS P4 2.8Ghz

... only sad thing about the AMD 2600 is that its virtually impossible to get hold of, but is this the sign of the future of things to come?

"The future is looking good for AMD as well. Its obvious that there is some headroom left in this "new" Thoroughbred core, and with motherboards based on the VIA KT400 and nForce2 about to ship, the AMD platform should remain on the cutting edge for some time. The upcoming "Barton" and "Hammer" processors should also help further AMD's cause. As of today, with the Athlon XP 2600+, AMD has one of the fastest desktop CPUs ever made, on their hands. Now, we're going to sit back and see how the competition responds..."

I checked a similar titled article on Toms Hardware - however their results seem to suggest the P4 is quicker.

AMD does seem to go alot faster Mhz for Mhz but its quite a way behind ... but does cost half the price of the quickest P4.
