Self-Harm Awareness Day - March 1st

Today is self-harm awareness day, a day about understanding, reducing stigma and reminding each other we are not alone. For those struggling, urges often rise and fall like waves even if they feel intense in the moment. If you are struggling right now with urges to hurt yourself, these 5 steps can help:
- Disposing anything you could use to harm yourself.
- Talking with somebody you trust.
- Posting a message on the boards for peer support.
- Holding something cold in your hands.
- Distracting yourself with a film, crafts or music.
Wanting to stop can feel complicated, it might be something you or someone you know has been struggling with for a while, but there are other ways to cope through those tough moments when things feel out of control. If you are struggling today, you don’t need to manage it alone - you can reach out.
We’d like to hear from you…
- Something you wish people understood about Self Harm?
- What helps when those urges arise?
- What makes it easier to ask for help?

I didn’t even know this was a day of awareness or anything.
that it’s not for attention, it’s a cry for help. Or that there is a guilt and shame that some carry with them when they engage in this behaviour and that’s why they hide it and don’t talk about it
distracting my mind with something creative. I found polymer clay helps me at times especially if I want to engage in the motion of hurting myself.
I’m not sure complete on why makes it easier for myself personally as I like to keep things to myself and hide it away.
but I guess having someone I know and trust and won’t judge me. Someone who is compassionate really. Having the option to tell someone what’s happening over a text or email so they know but can also give support in a way that feels safe and comforting to me.
I wish people understood that people don’t self harm for attention. I have never heard of someone who does this. If people were, why would self harm be such a taboo topic and why do people feel the need to hide it? Sure, for some people it could be a massive cry for help but people don’t do it for no reason - there is something there, something they need support with
I wish people understood it wasn’t an attempt to end your life it’s a coping mechanism
