why is nobody scared?

foxglovefoxglove Posts: 16 Settling in
when I was younger I knew about climate change but it was far away back then. but now I am so scared about climate change and the fact that I, a young teenager living with her parents, cannot do anything. I don't understand why nobody else is scared. it's very real, its not a theory anymore, it is happening and in my lifetime the world will become uninhabitable if drastic action is not taken. every day I wonder why nobody else seems to care and it really upsets me.
that's my little rant of the day. if anyone has any tips for sustainable living or generally saving the world t
hey would be much appreciated thanks <3
ps I included some things we looked at in our chemistry and biology lessons

    hey @foxglove 🙂

thank you for sharing that with us! everything you said is completely valid. it is scary, and you’re definitely not alone in feeling that way. climate change isn’t some distant future problem anymore, it’s here, and it’s overwhelming to see how many people still act like it’s not.

i think a lot of people do care deep down, but they either feel powerless or they shut it out because it’s easier not to think about it, but your awareness, your care, and your voice matter more than you realise!

some small but meaningful sustainable things you can do: reduce plastic use, shop second-hand, eat less meat or dairy if that’s accessible to you, talk about climate with others, support local activism, and just keep caring - that alone makes a difference.

i’m going to add a few links here to websites about how you can help with climate change in case you want to have a look at them:

you’re not being dramatic, and you’re definitely not alone in feeling this - we are all here for you <3

I think like Shannon said, most people do care and are nervous about it on a level. However, I think a lot of people try to think of it as something they can only partially control. There are little things we can do, but other than that, we have absolutely no control over the rest of the world. So I think if we were all worried sick about the things we can’t control, rather than the small things we can, we’d all be going insane.

@foxglove , thank you so much for making this post - this really hits a nerve, as I remember feeling so afraid about climate change when I was younger. A lot of climate anxiety!

It can feel so daunting to hear stories in the news and the latest scientific papers reporting on how the planet's health is degrading, and I hear how frightened this makes you too. It sounds like it's really hard to look around and feel like no one else is really fully recognizing the severity of what's going on. What has this been like for you day-to-day, and I wonder if there are any moments where worries about climate change tend to get louder for you? We're here to listen, and you're doing so well to talk about this.

In some of the most worried moments, I wonder if you've found anything that helps you to cope or to feel empowered to take action - however big or small?

I wonder if you have ever heard of Mikaela Loach? She is a climate activist who writes a lot about the power of hope too and holding onto hope in frightening times - https://www.mikaelaloach.com/.

You can find further information around climate anxiety here too - https://mentalhealth-uk.org/blog/what-is-climate-anxiety-and-what-can-we-do-about-it/
