Not having anything planned out

RedemptionRedemption Community Connector Posts: 4,155 Community Veteran
I want to do well, but I don’t have everything fully planned out or exactly where I want to be yet. I haven’t even got my first proper job, and while I know I’m moving at my own pace, I just don’t have my life fully figured out in terms of a career. I know some people have a hobby, project, or side hustle that eventually turns into their main thing, but I don’t have that right now. I want to do well, but I just don’t have it all planned out.

Sometimes I feel confident about myself, but other times I catch myself comparing my progress to others and end up feeling down. It’s tough because everyone’s path and timing are different some reach milestones early, others take longer, and that’s ok. It helps to remind myself that I’m doing well in my own way sometimes but I feel most of the time thats never good enough. For example, while some haven’t taken certain steps yet, I’ve made progress toward my goals, taking peoples advice to get a job, working on confidence but it's been extremely hard. The waiting, staying
determined with those regular thoughts of doubt come and go, and right now I’m just going through one of those phases as I often do.

Hi @Redemption, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us.

I just want to say that you’re not alone in feeling this way at all - I also feel that I don’t have everything planned out in terms of my career. A lot of my friends and others feel the same way. It’s completely okay not to have everything planned out — if anything, I think it shows that you care a lot about your future, which is important. It probably shows that we want to make worthwhile decisions related to our career, as we don’t want to expend all our time and energy on jobs we don’t like.

With time, you’ll experience a lot of different things, and then you can take a step back and reflect on what you’d like to go into further. For me, I’ve experienced working in the field of academia, and volunteering at a psych ward. Taking all of these experiences together, it’s made me realise that maybe one day I’d like to go into clinical psychology. But this choice is not set in stone and can change, and I haven’t exactly got it planned out yet, because I don’t know for certain if it’s really where I want to be.

I hear that you find yourself comparing yourself to others at times — it’s great that you acknowledge that you’re doing so well in your own way! Please keep reminding yourself of this. You’re going at your own pace, and that’s completely okay. You really have come a long way, and you’ve made so much progress!

You’re doing amazing, please never give up and don’t hestitate to reach out anytime <3
