i wasnt sure where to post this but i have good news. i finally got my section 117 aftercare sorted. if you dont know what that is its basically what you get after you leave hospital on a section 3. in my case i went into a psychiatric hospital. i was originally under a section 2, then i went onto a section 3 and for a short time i was a voluntary patient because i was near to my discharge date. but i still get it because according to the mind website you can still be a voluntary patient and be put under section 3 beforehand to get it. so yeah. thats what happened. i got my section 117 aftercare. of course this is not an instant process but it finally got approved after a year of waiting. i came into the psychiatric hospital in march of 2024 and left in may of 2024 so it has been just over a year that ive been waiting. i didnt even know that i was eligible to get it after i left until people told me.

    Hey!

That sounds like a great step forward for you! It must be so nice to have some good news after a year of waiting, and although as you said it is not instant, I really hope that its helpful for you and that you get what you need out of it. I'm also really glad that people managed to tell you that you were eligible for it, I know how it feels to not find things out until well after the fact and wish you had known sooner.

I hope that you're doing well.

    Hey @toffuna101

Even though the aftercare support is late it’s a really positive step, hopefully they can be a great source of support for you despite the delay in processing the request. Now you’ve been given this news how are you feeling about receiving the support from them :)

everyone im so confused. it says on multiple websites that my section 117 aftercare only ends when i no longer need it. and even if im doing well i may still need it to ensure that i stay well. then how come its ending in september? shouldnt they at least do a review first to make sure that i still need it or not?

@toffuna101 Ahh.. Sorry to hear that you're time with it is somewhat limited, but I have no doubts that you'll manage to make the most of it! And thats a good question about when it ends, is there anyone you know of that you might be able to contact to ask about this? They'll probably be able to give you a much more straightforward answer, specifically relating to your care.

@Serxphic i can try and contact my social worker but shes probably busy with meetings and stuff so id have to wait for her to contact me. i asked my camhs counsellor to pass over questions to my social worker anyways so hopefully ill get answers that way.

yeah @Serxphic hopefully they will. im glad the panel that oversees the section 117 aftercare at least gave me the summer for me to get more support then. if you want to know whats included in my section 117 aftercare it includes kayaking and having a carer come over. i think kayaking is three times a week in the summer holidays and the carer is eight hours a week term time and 12 hours a week in the holidays. i can go out with the carer and do stuff which will be good.

@toffuna101 Wow omg Kayaking sounds fun! I used to do something similar with my school for a little bit and I honestly enjoyed it so much; how are you feeling about doing kayaking? And that sounds good about the carer, one of my closest friends has a carer and she's told me countless times how much she appreciates them and how valuable their time has been together. I'm sure you definitely will manage to make the most of all of that, and I hope its valuable for you!

Yeahh, I totally get that! I'm glad you're doing okay, hopefully the few mood drops don't get you down too much, I know how terrible they feel in the moment though @toffuna101
