    Heyyy buddy,

I think it's great that you're thinking of phoning them. Don't worry too much about how you start the conversation. But I totally get wanting to know what to say.

When they answer, they say something along the lines of, "this is Samaritans, how can we help?" Perhaps you can just reply with something like, "Hi, I'm just going through a really tough time, and I need to talk". Then you can start talking about the stuff bothering you - perhaps you could provide any backstory first (e.g., if you've been suffering with hopelessness and losing your job recently has been the last straw for you, you could say "I've been battling feelings of hopelessness for a while now, and it's been really hard. Then recently, I was fired from my job. And that's been the last straw for me. It's made me start to feel suicidal, and I don't know how to cope").

Those are just some tips though, you can talk however you like. It's a safe space to talk, you may feel unsure of what to say and scared at first, but it'll get easier in no time so again, don't be concerned.

I hope it goes well if you do phone them:)

It's great that you're thinking about phoning the Samaritans, it's a huge step just picking up the phone so good for you!

I find that telephone services like Samaritans and ChildLine tend to be extremely understanding of people who aren't quite sure what to say, so even if you just say "Hi", they will be patient and help you to start talking. I like the suggestion above about starting with a statement like "I'm going through a hard time right now", then the person on the other end of the line will understand that it might be difficult for you to talk about.

    I hope it goes well!

just adding on to what others say - remember they are only wanting to help - and not going to judge you no matter what you say.
