A friend of mine came across this article last night and we had a pretty sizable discussion about it, as well as the wider notions behind what's being said.
For anyone not for the life of reading through a fairly long article, it's written by a young white woman who grew dreadlocks to help free herself of the societal pressures of womanhood, and then the reasons why she decided she needed to cut them off - the offence and disrespect she feels is caused by adopting dreadlocks without consideration of their cultural roots (for anyone who isn't aware, dreadlocks were a symbol of defying white supremacy - a "stick it" to slavery, apartheid, etc.).
The main underlying notion to this piece is that there is potential unseen harm and offence caused by cultural appropriation (the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture).

Their currency is the unsolicited taking of offence on behalf of other people who never asked for it. Next thing you know intimidating black women will be coming at small white dudes with scissors on campuses...
Not washing or cutting your hair is not cultural appropriation.
