i went to see my careers teacher yesterday, she said that when i apply to medical school, the universities in question wont be able to know where else i applied

i think its pretty cool since at my friends med interview at imperial they said to her
'i see you have applied to oxford - why is that?'

as this has the advantage for students, the disadvantage is with the panels who now might have a harder desicion to make

what does everyone think about this?

I think there is some confusion. Some tutors say that they do receive the front page of the UCAS form, i.e. with school and other options that you've applied to, others say that they do not see it in order to maintain fairness.

The answer to the question "Why have you applied elsewhere?" can well be, "because I want the best for my education."

Oxbridge and Durham are supposed to have conflicting interest - I'm told that there is an urban myth that Durham reject Oxbridge applicants on principle. This is probably incorrect, but does imply that they know where else you've applied...?

Ask UCAS - it's the only way to find out for definite...

I'm pretty sure the Uni's do get the front page of your UCAS form, since it has important things like Fee Status, Name and Address.

Not to mention the fact that when I was in my Cambridge interview, I saw the interviewer flipping through said front page.

Universities have mixed policies. I know Nottingham for one sees applying to Caxford as a challenge, and likes it. If Durham reject people on principal, then they're silly. They're losing some of their best potential students.

Universities are fickle things. Just go with the flow and collect as much information as you can.

i'll be applying for uni in sept and apparently ucas are changing their system so that from this sept uni's wont be able to no where else you applied - which i think is much better cos they wont judge u!!!

It's not very common, but some unis can be a bit odd about where you've applied. Durham is the main example I know of, particularly when you apply there and Oxford, several ppl I know got a really tought time there just cos they applied to Oxford too. Having said that, I'm at Oxford now and I didn't encounter any unis who were put off by my applying there too. At the end of the day, you might as well aim high and see if you can make it, if a uni is going to reject you for applying to somewhere they dislike (probably cos they think it's better than them) then it's not the right place for you to go.

Ummm I don't think it matter but if someone fancies researching this there must be a legal battle (potential cash........) if you think you are rejected wrongly!!! Always an idea!

Bloody hell sounds like yet another person thinking of suing just to get some money. Bloody Compensation Culture - we're turning into the Americans (No offense - but I can't standt this bit of American culture) It's because of people like this that many schools don't organise trips going climbing or orienteering, because of all the useless forms they have to fill in and STILL risk being sued by someone because they didn't "provide enough protection against the risk of injury - i.e. attaching 50 individual ropes, 10 feet thick crash mats, anti gravity devices and someone to catch anyone who falls"

Not that I know of, theres a significant minority of Oxbridge 'rejects' here. Places like Bristol can be funny, but Durham are desperate for the students

Yeah, there's a similar myth that certain medical schools will reject you if you have applied to certain others. Again, this is often between Oxbridge and the older London medical schools, Bristol too. But I haven't experienced that.

As for Durham, I don't think the rejection on principle is true, as Kermit says. Durham is very similar to the Oxbridge pair - collegiate, small, pretty, educationally well-respected. So I think they would welcome with open arms anyone of Oxbridge caliber.

i was under the impression that on courses with high applicant numbers the universities kept in contact with each other so that the good students were all offered a place at one university at least. if every uni offered palces to just the top few candidates it would leave other candidates without offers - therefore by keeping in touch with each other the unis can offer all most students a palce.

This may have changed since my day, and the arrival of the electronic UCAS form, but when I applied the med schools knew where else I had applied. The unis simply receive a photocopy of your UCAS form, so they get all the pages (apart from the parental occupation bit).

Good luck with your application, where have you applied to? Let me know how you get on.

I for one have completely given up on trying to understand selection proceedures. I have seen too many excellent people turned away from places to be able to comprehend their criteria. I'm just happy that I at least, got where I wanted to be.
