Does smoking affect your fitness when you are young?

I'm 22 and think I'm fit enough. I go to the gym and play footie and look after myself well enough but I do smoke 20 a day. I'm planning on joining the army and I know I can pass the physical tests easy enough.
Am I just lucky that smoking hasn't really damaged my fitness? I know as I get a bit older that could change but just hearing people always going on about how smoking screws up your fitness doesn't seem to make sense to me.

It affects your lung capacity and circulation. At a guess, although you don't feel like you're unfit, you're working harder than you have to.
Here's the NHS info on quitting.
You are wokring a lot harder, smoking doesn't onlyjust play with your physical body and how fit you are, but you are likely more to break down compared to other people as it stops your lungs. Hear is annother few articles you may wnt to check out from TheSite.org
