Could I live with myself if I

Could I live with myself if I named my kid TinTin?

The name's slightly different in Icelandic (Tinni).

I've already got a terrier, albeit a dark one but since the kid should be dark haired anyway it'll work out just fine.

Watcha think?

The question should be, can your child live with it?

Would TinTin really suit a 50 year old?

We really wanted to call our baby Electra but chickened out in the end and gave it to her as a middle name.

i think tinni's a really cute name. would everybody who saw his name instantly think of tintin? or is tintin not too popular there? haha. is it the equivalent of calling one of our children here iggle piggle? (a popular young childrens character just in case dont know hehe). if yes than nahh dont do it. i googled 'icelandic boys names' :D haha and i think finnur and ari are nice :p

Tinni would grow up to be an alcoholic, if you believe in nominative determinism...

Maybe if we were all living in tribes hunting for our food each day Tintin would be cool, but in modern society when your Son will be meeting people and introducing himself, perhaps holding meetings or giving speeches etc, he will not be comfatable saying his name is Tintin, for the rest of his life people will be answering, is that really your name.

Tinni i think is acceptable, you can get away with that as its not immediatly related to a young boy who goes on adventures with a little white fluffy dog, its Scandanavian with is cool and he can appear cosmopolitan.

haha, I almost forgot I had posted this thread.

Actually, TinTin sounds really strange, much like being named JohnJohn.

TinTin is a cool guy though. Quagmire is not.

So, we're all agreed that it's not ok to name your child Quagmire or TinTin but that Tinni is fine?

Depending on how much that name brings the character in mind, I guess.

It's alright guys. I found out that the name HAMMER is legal! Elias is forbidden but let's permit names like Israel and Cactus.

How can Iceland dictate what you can and can't call your child?
  • Options
Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
The same way any government can if you intend to register their birth, by refusing to issue a birth certificate unless you change the child's name to something that the gov considers suitable.

Call the kid 'Bullyfodder' and have done with it!
Kids are bleeding cruel enough as it is, don't give em more ammo...

If kids are going to bully someone they can easily enough find the ammo needed. A "common" name is no barrier to them. Been there. :)

And yeah, we have a naming committee. It's bloody ridiculous. Elias is banned on the grounds it doesn't look Icelandic enough, but they allow Harry which is less Icelandic. :chin: Oh, and the name Hilarious with a slightly more Icelandic spelling but means it's pronounced the same as in English is permitted. The word is meaningless in Icelandic. Not sure what the point of the committee is.

I can put two names together and together their meaning is "boy for sale" or another combination would be "ugly boy". It's definitely not the kids they're protecting. :thumb:

I've got no objection to naming rules if they stop names like "Klsftsrtzp"* but that's as far as they should go.

*(seriously, a couple in Germany some years back tried to give their kid a name with many letters and no vowels)
