this is just pplain wrong, if they want to use prisoners, they should pay them the same as everyone else even if just the 16+ minumum wage

though it is technically less than what any civilians could live off of
if they got the proper minumum wage for the age then some money was deducted for living costs and most of the rest put aside for when they get out or their families outside then i think it would be more appropiate

At least if thy leave prison with money in their pocket they're less likely to turn to crime as soon as they get out, to pay for basics like food, rent, etc.
Totally agree with this.
I think prisoners should HAVE to work. They should work full time hours and be given a fair wage for it. Money should be taken out of their wage to pay for their food and 'rent' as such, and also to pay for victim compensation, or to pay victims for something they stole or wrecked for example. The remainder should be split between spending money and savings for when they come out.
Why the hell should taxpayers work and pay for their upkeep just because they can't be law abiding while they sit on their arses all day?

In Italy in thre seventies and eighties ...don't know about now ...they had huge industrial prisons.
The inmates earned a little less than the going rate but were only allowed to use around a quarter of it.
The rest was banked for them.
The longer you served the bigger the balance on release.
This meant people leaving prison had the means to rent property etc.
Here you leave with one weeks benefit and then can't claim any for two weeks ...a recipe for disaster.
The idea of paying something to the victim is interestin.
Makes sense, and if we actually trained them in a useful skill they would be less likely to return to crime. At the moment we release them with about £50 and a lot of them know the only person who'll open their door with a friendly face is their old dealer.

You ever been in a prison? The alternative to work is to keep them locked up 23 hours a day (which is perfectly legal btw).
A lot of prisoners I've spoken to relish the opportunity to work. It might not be much money to us, but £5 to them is a fair bit of money, at least in Youth detention facilities. It's enough for phone cards, extra food e.t.c. and most of them also learn a trade.
The alternative is working them for free, give them a choice between the chain gang for nothing or sitting in a cell and see how many would still work for nothing given the choice.
23Hrs a day banged up is still the norm in many jails.
When you get put on a work gang you don't have choice ...you do it or go down the punishment block.
