Could you perhaps ask her to find me the correct symbols for family? - I would be forever grateful.

I have obviously done a google but there seems to be many 'varieties', and you dont trust them, do you know what I mean?

A lot of names have official translations/characters to use in Chinese, but can also just be using characters which sound roughly the same as your english name.

    Have a look here:

Tattoos in symbolised languages are tacky, you'll regret it inside of a week.

for Japanese kanji, I find Jisho.org really useful.

kanji for family seems to be 家 :) but as you've mentioned, it has different meanings, like house/home. 族 see here also means family/tribe.

I thought it would be jia ting which means family people or home people... the characters that maladjusted gave you i think.

I would love to have a chinese tatoo, with my chinese name, meng ling yu which means exquisite jade dream. However this is because it means something special to me, i spent time living there and learning the language.

Otherwise, yeh i think it can be a bit tacky.
