Shared house, shared internet...??

Former MemberFormer Member Posts: 1,876,323 The Mix Honorary Guru
I moved into a shared house a few weeks ago and am connected to the internet via a network.

If the landlord has made himself an administrator, can he see what websites I've been on using my personal laptop??

Not the usual porn bullshit, was just curious...

    It's possible.

If it's possible why do you think it'd be doubtful??

it is 100% possible to find what you are doing on the internet, as an analogy you can see it as your ISP, as they can watch what you are doing, it is possible that your administrator can watch what you are doing over the internet.

but very unlikely that anyone would bother setting it up

anyway pretty sure legally you have to sign to give your consent to have your internet traffic monitored by him, due to some act or something (like how it's illegal to read someone elses emails without their permission)

On my old router there was a log that showed every site/IP address that each computer on the network was connected to, with times etc. So yes it is very easy to do. Beware!

I know it's set up using Virgin Media, does anyone know if they specifically do the log thing that the above poster mentioned??

Just seems a bit invasive tbh if my internet usage is being monitered, I could understand if I was download movies/porn and watching snuff films but I'm not..

If it's secured by a password, then not so easy due to encryption. Ask your landlord. Anyone, in your LAN or not can view what you're doing on the internet, it depends on if it's secured. It's called "packet sniffing" If you want to be safe, use a VPN.
